I could go down the long rabbithole of figuring out how to call g*mp's image manipulation tools from a commandline or API, or getting imagemagick installed on this PC and figuring out how to port it over there...

or I could be silly and take advantage of the fact that I'm applying gamma ramps to an 8-bit greyscale image. What's the difference between the "before" and "after" images? a different palette.

two of the best feelings when programming are:

  1. figuring out a really clever way to solve a problem
  2. figuring out a really stupid way to solve a problem

i'm really excited to show https://compost.party to the world! it's a web server running on an old, broken phone, getting energy from the sun using one of those portable solar chargers that you may also have lying around.

it's a real oddity and a real beauty

I'm so tired of building a setup around a particular product or hardware line, and then suddenly they're building "AI" into the product and I'm having to move my stuff over to something new… and then my new platform flames out too after four years. I'm now trying to rebase my computing around things that can't be taken away from me.

What with MS de facto controlling the UEFI standard I fear eventually this will be impossible unless I literally move to homegrown CPUs running on a FPGA at 100 MHz

There’s no reason for the Silent Hill 2 Remake to exist except to make money for a former gaming company way past its prime.

Play Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition instead.

Kay Savetz took a leap of faith and bought dozens of master tapes for a lost radio show, with one of a kind interviews on them. He's seeking funds to pay a professional to digitize the tapes, and they all go on Internet Archive.

Douglas Adams, Bill Gates, Atari’s Jack Tramiel, MacPaint’s Bill Atkinson, Infocom’s Joel Berez, Star Trek’s Gene Roddenberry, musician Herbie Hancock, EA’s Trip Hawkins, Stewart Brand... they're all on here.

Massive leak at confirms what we have all known for years, just how much is tracked, stored, and monetized.

Even clearer now how Chrome tracks and reports EVERYTHING you do. For heavens' sake delete it now and move to Firefox

Also they've outright lied for years about their data collection and search practices.

Looks like 'Don't be evil' wasn't enough. ;)

What I wanted from AI: hundreds of robot servants to automate away all my stupid, repetitive tasks, leaving me free to pursue the life of the mind.

What I expected from AI: self-driving cars maybe, at some point.

What I got from AI: a wrong-answer machine which steals money from me and is powered by burning the rainforest.

There's a real Rube Goldberg quality to many of the attempts to find real use cases for LLMs: take regular desktop screenshots, OCR them, "find meaningful patterns" 🤔 so the system can answer queries... the amount of compute being chucked on a fire speculatively is absurd - so much of it already rolled out to users! The carbon cost of that is immediately alarming but there's also just something repellent about it from a systems design perspective. The desperation of these companies is palpable.

If you haven't seen it yet, go check out @ernie's new search engine ...

... which automatically appends "&udm=14" to the end of your search query ...

... thereby triggering Google to give you your results with no AI answer at the top, and (for me, anyway) no ads

It's like google from 2004 or something

I like using Pocket for the audio option to have articles read to me while I work. Most days I'm spending hours just digging holes. Is anyone aware of a self-hosted alternative to Pocket that has a similar feature? I would actually prefer an on device option for offline playback since I'm offline a lot.

How to use AI, a step by step guide:

  1. Ask AI a question
  2. Receive answer
  3. Ask yourself, if I asked a parrot this question and it responded this way, would I believe it as the truth?
  4. Walk away, do your own research on the original question to receive a well-informed answer
