It's currently 9F/-13C, headed to -1F/-18C by morning. The birds were eating well today, so hopefully they have enough calories to keep warm.

A male Northern cardinal, which is all over brilliant red, including its beak and with a black mask on its face, perches on a tree.
A male Northern flicker, a type of woodpecker, visits the suet block. It usually forages on the ground, but this one is hungry and isn't picky.
Four deer bedded down for a nap in my backyard during the afternoon. Unfortunately, I could only get 2 of them in the shot.

Going to ask because somehow I've made it this far without actually looking it up: if I want to do like a small database in a webpage and try it to a user session (ie, keep the state alive after the tab closes) do I need to do some sort of cookie thing, or local storage, or does indexdb live in a separate storage space somehow?

I've never needed this sort of frontend attention before.

@onelson I've only used local storage, but it sounds like indexedDB is the way to go. Sure wish I'd know about it before!

From what I can tell, indexedDB uses a local file / dir, and has pretty permissive limits: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Storage_API/Storage_quotas_and_eviction_criteria#how_much_data_can_be_stored

Apparently CE breathed its last about two weeks ago. I had a Sharp Mobilon Tripad in about 1999 that did (poorly) about 85% of what my iPad Pro does today -- all while running the aforementioned dearly departed CE.

I never thought it was such a bad little tree.

@andrew The Mobilon Tripad had a really fun form-factor; I wish we could still get something this robust but flexible. Unfortunately it looks like Vadem, the original designer, got mined for patents by MS and is now defunct.

@andrew Yeah, if I remember correctly there was a battery or something in the big tube at the back? It just felt really solid while also lightweight and nice in the hands.

I'd forgotten that it supported both PCMCIA and Compact Flash, as well; a lot of more recent reviews complain about its lack of options but you could do a ton with those two slot types at the time.

@mikey given the resources available in browsers now, I bet you could leverage your expertise to set up a terrific web-based game engine portfolio. In fact, the limitations of the browser keep classic game dev concepts like streaming map resources, fast texture lookup, and fast math approximations fresh and relevant.

Looking forward to more films from Juel Taylor - Creed II and the new Transformers are going in the queue. The only downside was that this film just highlights how Star Wars wasted John Boyega's potential and talents.

The Fourth Crusade was definitely the funniest crusade because all these French and Italian knights got together with a big Venetian fleet at the urging of the pope to retake the Holy Land in service of a great and benevolent all-loving god but the pope said "OK I will give this crusade my blessing but DON'T DO VIOLENCE AGAINST CHRISTIANS" and exactly the first thing the crusaders did was sack a Christian city and then the pope said "DICKS, WHAT DID I JUST FUCKING SAY?" and excommunicated them all but they said "Well gee, I guess you should just use your OTHER army and massive fleet to capture the Holy Land" so he relented and gave them his blessing again and said "BUT DO NOT DO VIOLENCE AGAINST ANY MORE CHRISTIANS AND THIS TIME I MEAN IT" so they went to Constantinople, the most magnificent city in Christendom and seat of the thousand-odd-year-old actual no-shit Roman Empire and the pope sent word to the priests in the army and said "YOU TELL THOSE TOFFS TO NOT SACK THAT FUCKING CHRISTIAN CITY I SWEAR TO GOD" but the priests passed along this message by sort of mumbling and saying "fine, it'll be fine" and then they expelled all the prostitutes from the crusader camp because they wanted to "purify" the army for its holy and noble work to come and then they burned a fuck-ton of Constantinople to the ground and sacked the shit out of it and never even got to the Holy Land, the end.
