@ai6yr I get all kinds of strange looks from co-workers when I play a song from the command line on my laptop.

They just don't consider that such a thing is even possible because they grew up with GUIs.

Meanwhile, I grew up with MS-DOS and Windows 3.1… where you were never far away from needing a CLI to do something. I started with Linux shortly after I started with Windows 95.

New study proves that COVID-19 is far more harmful and deadly than the flu.

Dr. Al-Aly wrote, “We observed higher risks of death, healthcare utilization and hits in most organ systems in COVID-19 than the flu. This was evident in pre-Delta, Delta, and Omicron. And also evident in vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. COVID-19 remain a much more serious threat to human health than the flu.”

It gets worse than "the flu"… I was told it was like a cold now. I really don't think that's a good equivalence.

Only treatment for a cold is rest… there's some things that reduce symptoms, but it really just needs a week's rest and there's minimal damage left behind.

COVID-19, you might be lucky and get away with a bad head cold. I got through without any loss of smell/taste, or any obvious lasting effects. Or you might be one of the unlucky ones, for which symptoms never leave you.

Anti-virals exist now, but they can also have "bounce back" -- just ask Joe Biden.

That aspect makes it feel like Russian Roulette to me.

That there, is probably the biggest issue we face right now. Our buildings have rubbish ventilation, and so viral loads, whether it be COVID-19, influenza, the common cold… whatever… build up.

We need to move beyond masks, we need to fix the ventilation. Medical facilities and nursing homes being of high importance here.

mastodonmigration, (edited ) to threads
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

IMPORTANT. Threads stated policy is to collect and exploit Fediverse user personal data without explicit consent.

Now is a very good time to review Threads Terms of Use (https://help.instagram.com/769983657850450) and Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944).

Note just by following a Threads user or replying to a post, Meta claims they are entitled to your personal data.

And what do they say they will do with your data? Provide you with "business services (including ads)."

stuartl,
@stuartl@longlandclan.id.au avatar

@mastodonmigration

It's worth noting that the first quoted section, seems to be more an artefact of how federation works. By me replying to this thread, a copy of my post is hosted on the "home" server for the thread (mastodon.online), and for the post to render correctly, it also hosts a mirror of my profile.

For Meta to participate as a Fediverse instance, it would more-or-less have to do the same thing.

I don't have a particularly big problem with that.

One thing we sadly cannot control or enforce, is how any HTTP client (whether it be, web browser, Fediverse instance or other piece of software), interprets and uses the content of our posts.

So nothing stops anyone from archiving what we've posted and doing whatever with it. We can ask that it not be fed into a , but it's symbolic, with no technical means of enforcement and no obvious means of detection.

As for ads, I'd love to see how Meta is going to display "targeted ads" on the instance I run.

If they sent me ads as "mentions" from an account, I could simply mute/block that account. The only other way I see is that they exploit the fact that Meta produce ReactJS, which Mastodon's web UI is built on, and mount a supply-chain attack to inject an ad banner on my Mastodon instance.

I think the implications on the latter would make their position untenable.

St. Vincent's Hospital seem the most reckless… "all visitors are now required to wear a surgical mask (rather than N95), except for when visiting COVID-19 patients where full PPE, including an N95 mask, is required"

If someone rocks up to a general ward sporting a properly fitted N95/N100 mask, why would they compromise that by insisting on a shitty surgical mask?

Fine, they might not supply N95s for those who lack anything… but as I've said before, tell me to take my properly fitted mask (full-face elastomeric) off for a surgical mask -- I'll tell you to go get stuffed.

Went back to DVDs (on my PC), after one too many evenings dealing with advertising in the middle of free streamed movies. ("free" i.e. paid for by that advertising). Amazon Prime used to be not-so-bad, but it's terrible now. I forgot how awesome it is to NOT BE INTERRUPTED in the middle of key movie scenes. Borrowing them from the library, and buying some of the ones I'll watch multiple times from thrift stores/library sales.

@ai6yr People at work have tried to "evangelise" Spotify to me.

My arguments against it have basically been:

  1. I've been collecting albums (CDs and vinyl) longer than they've been alive.
  2. The albums I have in my collection from that time, still play just fine.
  3. Lots of stuff I listen to isn't on the streaming platforms
  4. Since it's all "ripped" to the computer, I can pretty much access any of it at any time, without incurring data charges.
  5. No big yellow taxi will be taking my "Harvest" away just because it was sharing a server with a conspiracy theorist.
  6. When I go, executors of my estate can pick through what I have, keep what they want, and sell the rest.

Admittedly, it's a useful way to know squid has silently died… since most sites are HTTPS, they bypass the transparent proxy I have here.

Interestingly, it's only that page which has the problem. This is the same radar at 128k.
