@Neblib I host a plex server on Windows on my old gaming pc which acts as a sort of informal file server as well. Should probably just redo it with linux and go the whole way but haven't had time yet.
@Neblib I swear I was imagining it but my oldest rokus are bordering on unusably slow lately and I am starting to wonder if its because they're loading up more of this resource intensive ad serving garbage
If Google is going to be aggressively fighting against ad blocking, they should be held to a far higher, potentially legal, standard for ensuring safe advertisements.
Because one of the really important reasons for using ad blocking is safety from scams and malware. And Google owns THE largest ad network, and it serves malicious ads every day.
Windows 10 has started showing me adverts for Microsoft products every month or so. I do not want any distractions while I'm working. How do I stop this?
Microsoft starts testing #ads in the Windows 11 Start menu
Companies won't be happy until every inch of life is monetized with ads.
When my dad passed away in 2022, one gravestone company offered a 5% discount if we allowed them to put their imprint on the back, notating where the gravestone came from. I guess they wanted people who had new funerals to walk past and think "That's a nice tombstone. I'd liked something like that for [The person getting buried]" & see it https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/12/24128640/microsoft-windows-11-start-menu-ads-app-recommendations
@paul time to jump ship I think. When my Win10 device shows signs of microsoft interference (it will be coerced to upgrade at some point, forcefully I’ll bet), it’s Linux for me.
I believe this is a pretty new feature within Kagi Search. You can click on the yellow/orange shield with the exclamation mark in it and you get the popup that you see here.
This popup tells you just how many ads and trackers that specific site uses as well as what category of ads and trackers it uses.
This is one of the neatest things I've seen Kagi Search add so far.
@shortwavesurfer2009 Nice. I've been using it for about 3 - 4 months thanks to @jcrabapple recommending it since he uses it, or at least used to use it.
🤦♂️ Mozilla has apparently decided to get into the advertising business.
"We are growing the #Mozilla#Ads team to create a digital #advertising platform that is consistent with Mozilla’s principles. As an early member of the product team you will help drive our vision to best serve users and advertisers with effective #privacy respecting ad products."
@ValerieSonh Yeah, this tracks. We're now a month or two into turning off all paid advertising for #Ploopy and literally none of the traffic data we can audit directly has registered meaningful negative change.
It's almost as if our users (mostly people who know their way around technology) have effective ways of avoiding ads altogether?!
