Starting to listen to @mike's podcast with @cubicgarden on the and BBC's Mastodon project ....

So Ian has been "starting fires" (his job title) for 20 years at the BBC. (I relate, I often feel like a fire starter myself.)

@cubicgarden says the ability to verify accounts on social media -- without pay or other third-party rules -- is critical for an organization such as the BBC.

Trust is essential.

@J12t
Do you know how they want to verify accounts?

(Or should it have been obvious to me?...)

@cubicgarden: super-local communities are very powerful, and become possible in the Fediverse, not so much on big centralized platforms.

@cubicgarden mentions https://castling.club/ -- playing chess over ActivityPub -- on @mike's podcast as an example of something unexpected that can be done in the and could not have been done before.

also got a mention on @mike 's podcast with @cubicgarden :

FediForum demo tracks, like with @darius showing gath.io, apparently are quite useful to tell people about Fediverse projects they hadn't known about.

I should mention that the next FediForum is in March! Registration just opened yesterday: https://fediforum.org/

@mike and @cubicgarden are discussing how amazing it is that all of us building the fediverse — including private companies like Flipboard and public service orgs like the BBC — and countless independent developers I would add — somehow feel like they are all on the same team.

At about 30:55, @mike talks about something really important that the enables, and that, so far, very few people talk about: the impact on the internet when previously jealously guarded social graphs become a shared, public good. It’s a bit abstract, but listen to it! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dot-social/id1717622022?i=1000637575109

He’s really making the case why any business that interacts with a social network today — which is probably almost all of them — is much better off in the than anywhere else: control over your own destiny. Don’t squeeze into a box defined by somebody else. Do what you want to do.

@cubicgarden points out how the somehow stopped at describing the as a replacement. But it is so much more, or at least it could be. Totally agree!!

@tantek.com also got a shout-out in @cubicgarden and @mike ‘s podcast. The has been an early pioneer towards largely the same vision as the , starting with individuals itching their own itch.

@cubicgarden has the greatest last line:

"It's going to be an unstoppable force. In a few years time, people will go: oh remember how we all used to use these proprietary social networks, you had to use their client, oh dear!"

cubicgarden,
@cubicgarden@mas.to avatar

@J12t

You laugh but it will happen :)
Just like how we use to have one just one mail client or even one way of using sms...

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@cubicgarden actually I’m willing to go one step further: we will stop thinking of social networking as a thing, whether on closed platforms or with open protocols.

Instead, we will do the things we want to do online in the context and with the people we want to have around, whether that’s reading the news or shopping or entertainment.

A bit like “ambient connectivity” on mobile phones replaced dedicated phone lines back in the days.

Let’s call it “ambient social”.

@J12t @mike @cubicgarden thanks for the pointer, I’ll definitely give it a listen. BTW I’m currently listening to this book. https://www.audible.com/pd/0593339606?source_code=ASSORAP0511160006&share_location=player_overflow and it’s becoming abundantly obvious why it feels so much better in the fedeverse - NO ALGORITHM diving the HYPE MACHINE!

@lrreynolds
Oooh which book? Can't see the audible link...

But yes

No...
Algorithm unless you apply one yourself
hype machine driving sentiment, fear and trolling
Focus on how to maximise "engagement"
Over/zealous owner

😅

@cubicgarden I sent you the link to the book I was referring to separately. It’s called the Hype Machine. The author Sinan Aral seems like someone who would be really worthwhile talking with. The book is a couple of years old (published in 2020) so he didn’t discuss Mastodon but in listening to his thesis I’m certain he would see it’s potential for a better social media experience and would have some great ideas how to do some experiments to validate that potential. Hope you guys connect…

mikedev,

Why not hold a FediForum in the fediverse? So people in other timezones and that have day jobs and may not have an expense account don't get left out. Again.

Just a thought.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@mikedev I hear you. The format we currently have for is good and works, but we are thinking of adding additional formats, including in-person. Lots of practical problems to solve but we'll get there eventually ...

When you say "FediForum in the fediverse", how exactly would you imagine this working?

mikedev,

"When you say "FediForum in the fediverse", how exactly would you imagine this working? "

Lessee, the fediverse contains blogs, personal communications, web publishing, conversations, groups, events and calendars, video publishing, live streaming, cloud storage, and more. I think it would be a very sad story if you can't find anything in here that might be useful for global collaboration.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@mikedev I don’t think tools are the problem. The challenge is to create a sense of place, a sense of now, a sense of open, emphatic conversation delivering delightful insights, connections etc. for a bunch of people who mostly don’t know each other, or not well, so that when it’s over, everyone goes “wow, this was great, let’s do it again”.

Open Space, what we do for FediForum, has been iterated over for 20+ years, which is why it works so well and we like to use it.

mikedev,

That's OK. Nobody cares what i think. I'm here to promote the fediverse and what it is capable of, not some junket that's held in the middle of the night on a workday using some format that might have worked for AOL and doesn't actually use the fediverse.

If that floats your boat -- great. You lost me. Have fun.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@mikedev if you build the equivalent of QiQo on the fediverse — or something sufficiently similar, that supports a version of Open Space, or help Lucas make QiQo so — we’ll be the first ones to use it. (In fact, I think it is one of the better business ideas I know of for the fediverse…)

However, this is not a simple problem. (The tech is straightforward; everything else is not) If solved, I’d apply it immediately in a ton of places :-)

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@mikedev also, apac time zones. We have not seen enough people from there to expect critical mass for an event. Do you see it differently?

What could we/all/anybody do to change this?
