If you had the time/skills, what feature would you like to work on that's missing or could be improved on the fediverse platform(s) you're using?

Right before Twitter fell apart, they were testing a way to associate automated accounts with who created them via an "automated by" label.

https://techcrunch.com/2022/02/16/twitter-officially-launches-labels-to-identify-the-good-bots/

If I knew Ruby, that would be a fun feature to add.

@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@stefan this wouldn't be too hard to add, the hardest part is the AP side, e.g., bot account says human account manages it, human account has to approve; that requires something done over activitypub

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@thisismissem Now that I said this out loud, it's tempting to actually look into this.

I've always learned best by doing.

@stefan probably worth raising an issue on mastodon first?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@thisismissem Yes, good point. Will do later in the day!

@stefan I think theoretically you could already do something like this with the verified link mechanism if you could easily set a rel=“me” link from a mastodon account pointing to another mastodon account (which would also be useful for verifying non-bot alts) https://joinmastodon.org/verification

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@ryanfb Interesting approach!

@stefan every time I see Ruby or Python mentioned I think of this weird tweet I saw years ago that still makes me laugh:

"I'm skilled at Ruby and Python, but I can use any gem to charm any snake."

🤣

@stefan Two things that probably aren't sexy enough to gain any traction anywhere:

  1. some sort of URI. Clicking on a link to eg. a post normally takes me to the website where the post is, but I'd rather have it open in my fediverse app or in my own logged in fediverse account in a browser. Having a link that I could share like: activitypub:social.coop/sam?post=1234 or something would be much nicer.
sam,
@sam@social.coop avatar

@stefan 2. a server that allows you to publish different types of content. I hate that I have a separate mastodon account on social.coop for posting short social media stuff, a peertube account on urbanists.social for posting video, an account on mobilizion for posting events, etc. instead it would be nice if those were all just client interfaces that showed a different view focusing on different stuff that was all being posted from my main account, whatever that was.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@sam @stefan this. My pixelfed is via pxlmo and I'd post a lot more if it was all via a main interface, I use Tusky mobile for just Masto/Firefox on desktop (and Firefox just for pxlmo on both), but make me one app for Android that puts both (and more!) in there better than just using Firefox, I'm on that.

sam,
@sam@social.coop avatar

@jake4480 @stefan that's actually a slightly different thing than what I'm proposing (I think), but yah, that too! You could do an app right now that let you log into multiple accounts and it would show different content depending on the types of stuff published from those accounts. What I really want though is a single account (sam@social.coop in my case) that lets me log in with different clients that each post different kinds of activitypub objects (videos on channels, short posts, etc.)

@jake4480@c.im avatar

@sam @stefan oh wow okay hell yeah, that sounds killer too haha

@stefan Like that old apocryphal story about the developer who joined a firm, fixed a bug (that had annoyed them as a user), promoted to production, and tendered their resignation — I would consider doing the same to have more than 500 chars in posts. 😂

I'd like an option for some tooters to autogenerate alt text. There are interesting memes with text that I am reluctant to boost because... no alt text. On the other hand, adding alt text can be a creative way to emphasise the purpose behind your toot in the first place. Some tooters have a lot of fun with alt text, to others it's a barrier to fun.

:mastodon:

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@soc_i_ety Definitely!

I know some people don't like auto-generated image descriptions, but blind people are already relying on them, so this way there would be some quality control.

https://mastodon.social/@botwiki/111477849625070656

People would just need to use the auto-generated text as a starting point, rather than rely on it completely.

HeatherFromTexas,
@HeatherFromTexas@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan I use Mastodon in a mobile web browser. I wish I could see alt-text on other people's images, but I can't figure out how.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@HeatherFromTexas That should really be a feature of the browser you're using, mind sharing which one that is?

HeatherFromTexas,
@HeatherFromTexas@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan I've tried DuckDuckGo, Firefox, and Chrome. I can't see it on any of them.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@HeatherFromTexas This might be different on iOS, but on Android, you can press and hold on the image, and the alt text will show up at the top of the screen. You might have to tap the text to see it in full.

HeatherFromTexas,
@HeatherFromTexas@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan This is what I get when I press and hold the image...

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@HeatherFromTexas Can you try tapping on the image itself to enlarge it, and then try again?

HeatherFromTexas,
@HeatherFromTexas@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan It just does this...

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@HeatherFromTexas Hmm, is it the same in other browsers you have installed?

HeatherFromTexas,
@HeatherFromTexas@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan Actually, no. Thanks for walking me through it!

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@HeatherFromTexas Ah, are you able to see it now?

HeatherFromTexas,
@HeatherFromTexas@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan If I enlarge the image, I can see the alt-text with Chrome and Firefox but not DuckDuckGo.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@HeatherFromTexas Great, really glad I was able to help!
