#HumanRights groups are urging US President Joe Biden’s administration to oppose threats against the International Criminal Court (ICC) after its chief prosecutor’s decision to seek arrest warrants against Israeli officials drew ire in #Washington.
In a letter to #Biden that was made public on Thursday, more than 100 organisations from around the world called on the US government to “oppose any legislative efforts to undermine the #ICC”.
Over 100 MPs and Lords have signed a letter calling on the UK government to respect the International Criminal Court. #ICC#WarCrimes#HumanRights#palestine
Keir Starmer and David Lammy have not signed the letter.
Considering Palestine is NOT a nation. Yet.
"The ICC considers cases against individuals and as such has to be distinguished from the International Court of Justice, which rules on disputes between states, such as the case brought by South Africa against Israel in January 2024 under the 1948 Genocide Convention." https://www.chathamhouse.org/2024/05/icc-prosecutors-applications-arrest-warrants-explained
"None of this is about keeping us safe. It’s about policing the boundaries of debate, suppressing attempts to challenge economic power and stifling protest against environmental destruction, the massacre of Palestinians and other great harms"
George Monbiot on the 'independent' report by sex pest John Woodcock (ennobled as Lord Walney for his part in removing Jeremy Corbyn). The report is horrifying in its clampdown on protest.
On the publication of Article !('s latest annual report on freedom of expression, executive director Quinn McKew summarises the situation:
'At no point in the last 20 years have so many people been denied the benefits of open societies, like the ability to voice opinions, access a free media or participate in free and open elections' (quoted in The Guardian).
And you'll note that the UK ranks 33rd in their report on freedom of expression.

The photo is from #Kenya where #policebrutality is all too common and endorsed by the government. Protests? There’s no peaceful protesting here, precious.
The world is now seeing how we are manipulated to see what they want us to see. Who THEY decide are the “enemy” and who isn’t. When most of the world is watching, and not agreeing, they highlight themselves. #hypocrisy#warcrimes#humanrights
The Rwandan government has barred Clementine de Montjoye, a senior researcher in Human Rights Watch’s Africa division, from entering the country, prompting accusations that officials are seeking to dodge independent scrutiny just weeks before the UK government is due to send asylum seekers there for the first time.
Matthew McManus writes that those who imagine that there was a pre-Trump iteration of the US right in which the right was moderate are indulging in fantasy.
The right has long been driven by the radical determination to turn back the tide of equal rights for minority groups and legislate the notion that some people are superior to others.
Did you know the largest gold mine operation in the world - #barrick - is #canadian? Did you know they have a mile-long record of #humanRights violations, including multiple massacres?
"Il 16 maggio del 1944, circa 6.500 #rom e #sinti prigionieri a #Birkenau riuscirono a disinnescare il piano previsto per il massacro finale dell’intero settore del campo. Nonostante i rivoltosi siano poi stati smistati in altri campi o uccisi nei mesi a seguire, questa storia di ribellione rimane incisa nella storia."
"The [European] Convention [on Human Rights] was drafted [...] in the aftermath of the horror of the Second World War, but over 70 years ago. And it's now clearly been overtaken by events"
— Conservative and Unionist Party MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, House of Commons, 2024-05-14
Your Member of Parliament yesterday represented you by stating that the #ECHR, guaranteeing freedom from slavery and torture, the rights to life and fair trials, so horrifically violated during WW2 and fought for by many, are now out of date and should be renegotiated by the United Kingdom in favour of more limited #HumanRights.
Is this your view?
Are you willing to espouse this view aloud in, say, Wickford Memorial Park?
