Young people are waking up every day to media about war, genocides, dead children. They are unsure of being able to make a living, scared by debt, violence, addiction, homelessness. They are unsure if the burning planet will even support their lives. They are struggling for secure basic housing after having their lives upended by a pandemic...
@sun@mrsaturday@quinn i wouldn't blame communication itself, i blame the bigtech that control and pervert how the communication channel operates... if the article doesn't bring attention to bigtech then its effectively calling for more communication censorship imo.
the difference is subtle but it means the difference between freedom vs further inflicting mass narratve control. we should start actively informing folkthat the o/ses and firmare on their phones is bad for them, #fdroid is all well and good, but it means zip nada null if the underlying technology is a black box.
@frogzone@sun@quinn It's a gradual process, and F-Droid hosts not only the apps but also the tools to allow anyone to control their communication channels and beyond. F-Droid is the easiest step to take first.
A lot of people* ask me "if you still DJed now Jim, what on earth would it sound like?" Well, I sold my decks earlier this year, so that's never happening again, but Spotify does exist. This is what it would sound like
Can we productively talk about how many alien civilizations throughout the Milky Way might be actively broadcasting or receiving messages? How would we estimate that?
N ≈ R×fp×ne×fl×fi×fc×L
R = ⭐️ formation rate
fp = fraction of ⭐️ with 🌎
ne = 🌎 per ⭐️ on avg that could support life
fl = fraction with life
fi = fraction of life becoming intelligent
fc = fraction that 📡 into 🌌
L = how long they broadcast
Dr. Drake was also responsible (along with Richard Isaacman, Linda May, James C.G. Walker, Carl Sagan, and others) for the Arecibo Message, which I wrote about in the thread linked below.
It can be squeezed into just four posts, with room to spare, on my mastodon instance with its 500 character limit.
@MadameMollette
@davatron5000 I love your point about how you end up writing your own (worse) library / framework. I think this is under-appreciated by the no-dependencies crowd.
@gerotakke ah Bremsen and drop is fair.
@sarahtaber Pellagra (niacin deficiency due to extremely limited mostly cornmeal-based diet) was also a massive problem in the US in the early 1900s. It was essentially eliminated when flour and bread started to be fortified with niacin during WW2.
@Merlyn@f4grx I also find the different paranoias & phobias that different countries have to be quite fascinating, & while some have reasonable historical bases, most seem archaic to me.
But the fact that a regular Dutch bank card can’t be used to pay in a supermarket in Germany also speaks to the antiquated banking system here – it’s bananas.
@markmccaughrean@f4grx I'm just weird. It's convenient until the power goes out. I like cashy money, it makes it real. Ethereal everything is a very strange concept to me it becomes just numbers and I am not too good at those.
Twelve years ago I was invited to present on #DNSSEC in Moscow. Quite the show actually: we had simulataneous translators (think: EU parliament) who translated my English to Russian and back for questions from the audience.
Imagine my surprise when I met @krisbuytaert there: he too had been invited to give a talk.
The stay was great: it allowed me to brush up on my Russian: I learned how to pronounce 'nyet'.
