The https://kbin.social server is now federating with the Fediverse. You can follow/interact with kbin.social magazines & users from other Kbin servers, Mastodon & rest of the Fediverse. For example the TIL magazine is at @TodayILearned, the lead dev of Kbin is at @ernest
There's a new Kbin server at https://readit.buzz which is run by the same people as the Universodon.com Mastodon server. It's open for signups, just click "log in" and then "register".
@feditips@ernest@TodayILearned I don't understand how this federation works cross fedi-software. Like could I follow a kbin subkbin(?) on mastidon and vice verse??
@ivy I've absolutely no doubt that better mod tools will be added to at least kbin, but as of today, I can't recommend it due to the lack of them (same reason I couldn't recommend using BlueSky when it had absolutely zero moderation tools)
But we really need to move past every project reinventing the same tools.
@thisismissem hello Emelia, it'd be nice if you publish your full report so that @ernest can take a look at it. He's the main developer of kbin and the admin of kbin.social. He's very responsive to the community and works with a surprising amount of transparency. Although he might be busy right now, I believe this would be something that he is interested in.
Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...
lemmy.world still "has" content from beehaw before the block happened. you can still see it and interact with it, but anything you do on beehaw communities that you have copies of won't get synced to beehaw, and thus can't be seen by anyone else on the fediverse.
you shouldn't be getting new posts from beehaw at all, other than comments inside of non-beehaw communities (such as in a kbin magazine where a beehaw user comments).
With our growth numbers and with kbin finally with Lemmy again, things around the link aggregator fediverse feel more active than ever. Today when browsing all on Jerboa I saw so many more communities, posts, and comments than even yesterday. It's starting to feel like we have some real traction going on here. Let me know if you...
100%! I'm excited to see more growth. The federation between kbin and lemmy is great. I love that it can also federate with anything else using ActivityPub, basically.
The search form has been fixed (if you were experiencing this issue). This time, the Docker recreate may take a bit longer. Y’all: I have been wrestling with kbin on the fedia.io instance, but I want to take a step back and give some perspective. Kbin is new, it’s growing crazy fast, and it really wasn’t in a place to support the migration from Reddit. Despite that, @ernest has been working his tail off knocking down issues and helpings instance admins.
Reddit certainly seems to be tripling down on their position and I think kbin is shaping up to be a worthy alternative. If you like kbin (on whatever instance you use it on) and want to see it grow, may I ask that you throw some money Ernest’s way? (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin)
I want to publicly thank Ernest for kbin and for his contributions to our growing fediverse community.
Looks like #Lemmy and #Kbin keep being mentioned together, which to me suggests we might have averted "mastodonization" of the #threadiverse — i.e. a situation where the whole network gets identified with a single piece of software. 🎉
@ivy@hook@rysiek i haven’t been able to see any Lemmy or Kbin posts through mastodon. Not even copying the link directly. I’m possibly doing something wrong :p
#Lemmy now has 135,369 accounts. That is tracking with my expectations.
But while #Kbin had ~7,000 accounts yesterday, it’s just shot up to 30,930 accounts today.
While Lemmy is the 5th most used server software on the Fediverse, Kbin is now in 10th place and it’s growing at a faster rate than Lemmy.
A few days ago, I predicted that the #RedditMigration would result in 150,000-300,000 new accounts being created on the Fediverse. That expectation has already been met.
This #RedditMigration is fundamentally changing the course of the Fediverse. It’s moved the Fediverse from being primarily about microblogging to having more eclectic use cases.
While the #TwitterMigration validated that decentralized social media can appeal to millions of people, the #RedditMigration has validated that decentralized social media has man varied applications – both in the software and use case sense.
So after a few days of lurking Kbin and trying to understand the marvelous world of the Fediverse, I've tried keep some mental notes of the struggles I've had and some spontaneous areas of improvement that I personally would like to see....
Yeah, I broadly agree with you, but I actually strongly with you about the terminology here. Magazines should just be called Communities.
Other instances use community, and the fediverse will only be more confusing to newcomers if every instance has their own cute word. (Imagine if there were kbin Magazines, Lemmy SubLems, and Beehaw Hives. Try teaching that to your friends lol.)
Joining a community is the more correct metaphor here. I can hang out in a community, I can interact with others in my community, I can even contribute to my community. That's what we're aiming for here right, lots of small-medium communities.
On the other hand, a magazine is not something I really interact with. I do subscribe to it, and then I'll read it when it's delivered. But I can't say I've ever contributed to a magazine, let alone had a conversation with the contents of one.
I know ernest is just doing his best here lol, so he has plenty on his mind as is. But I really think that switching magazine to community sets the correct tone for every user here.
In case anyone has moral issues with migrating to Lemmy vs Kbin, check this out. So yea, turns out the dude stole a lot of code from other projects and people.
Wow, very condemning... He apologized and said he was gonna make it right, so where's the problem? Also, comparing apples and eggs here. "Stealing" code VS. human rights issues / tankies...
Whew. It's not open for registrations and I don't have the qualifications to open it up, but my #kbin instance has been running for over a week, close to 10 days now. The things my little instance has seen in that time has been INTENSE.
My little instance was just one of about 6, or 7 kbin instances when it finally went live, but now #fedidb lists 28 kbin servers with more coming online constantly.
Helping others where I can with information about how I managed to get mine running as well as helping others learn about #kbin has been a wild and intense experience.
I know that with more people coming to kbin that the little part that I played in these last few days will echo for a while across the #fediverse as more people join kbin and other platforms.
@dannekrose
Just curious, based on your experience what do you recommend users looking to get into #kbin do? I've seen folks say all the servers are way overloaded, should we be running our own instances, waiting a month or two...?
hey everyone,
if you've been keeping tabs on the internet drama you probably know about all of reddit shenanigans. when I first heard about the blackout I was really worried about loosing the 196 community and things like whenthe, r/traaa, and gay sounds shitposts so I decided to try and make an instance that could act as a central hub of sorts and try and keep these communities connected. it's really important that we bring these communities over to the fediverse if we want them to be resilient and I think this is the right step forward. I know things are still rough around the edges and there will be growing pains, but as the lorax said, "a tree falls the way it leans"
reddit and corporations will always lean to enshitification but for once we have something that leans the right way
if this is going to work, we need as many people as possible to start switching over and we are going to need your memes. lots and lots of memes. if we all get on board we can make this work
with this post I would like to officially announce fedi196.gay is up and ready for open registration
I love you all and I look forward to seeing you, wherever you wind up on the fediverse ❤️

when I first decided to run something I was kinda torn between lemmy and postmill, because lemmy was problematic and postmill doesn't support federation so both were kinda bad options
that's why when I heard about kbin I went all in and got fedi196.gay put together. since kbin is fully federated, anyone on here can keep connected with the rest of the community weather they're on lemmy or kbin and hopefully soon postmill will support federation so we can link into them too. I think kbin is the ideal hub platform because it supports pretty much everything and has a pretty good user experience
So was looking at Kbin and I can't seem to find a masterlist of instances like I could with the version of fedi on this platform
Does anyone have a good list of instances to join? preferably ones that are lgbtq, trans spaces that aren't full of tankies and don't federate with bigots?
Speaking of, I definitely wouldn't mind defederating with lemmygrad (and maybe even lemmy.ml itself, since it resolves to the same IP) because it is suuuuper tankie.
Hell, I wouldn't mind moving to kbin, but that's probably a bit annoying for most since most of us just moved off of reddit.
How has ur lemmy experience been so far?
Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...

I don’t get what the problem is? Anyone can elaborate....
