I just tried installing kbin as described in the post and downloading Hermit and I'm not really seeing a difference between the two options. Am I just missing something?
This is on kbin. Username in the upper right, Settings, scroll down through the stuff there and stop when you see the Delete Account button. Look for the small cog and click it. Turn on the option to sticky navbar - you may want to toggle infinite scrolling and maybe the show icons options while there as well.
Right?, it feels rewarding to add the discussion, to help solve issues in the code (if you can), helping people navigate where they want to go.
At least for me, reddit failed in something, making me feel part of its community, kbin is succeeding at this so far.
Edit: Obligatory plug of other kbin instances for new users to join: fedia.io, readit.buzz, fediverse.boo,
By joining them you are spreading the load so we can keep all instances stable.
There is a substantial amount of spam and NSFW posts on the All page coming through already. Most NSFW posts aren't being tagged as such and are coming right through. I am not sure how this can be weathered but we need something in place fairly soon, I feel like we are days away from rivers of bad stuff, especially via some of...
Several people here are saying that the bulk of it is coming from lemmynsfw. If so then it may well be best to defederate in the short term to buy time for a better solution (like marking everything from there NSFW automatically, either by a lemmy enhancement on their end or a kbin enhancement here)
Yep. I'm only going to be there occasionally for the more esoteric subs, but Spez has really turned out to be a double-dealing liar, and I feel dirty every time I peek there.
When I visit kbin.social, I see new posts regularly. On other servers posts stay on the frontpage for multiple days. This is also true if I switch their sorting to "hot". So that is probably not the difference....
That's the magic of ActivityPub! It's a federation standard that Fediverse services utilize to sync data. That's why you can also view Mastodon posts on kbin (and elsewhere).
Looks like #Lemmy and #Kbin keep being mentioned together, which to me suggests we might have averted "mastodonization" of the #threadiverse — i.e. a situation where the whole network gets identified with a single piece of software. 🎉
Their post announcing it, has comments disabled. I have been going on reddit looking for polls to vote "yes" to continue to participate in the blackout. This was kind of a bummer....
I have read 3 books since the blackout. I didn't realize how much space and time Reddit was taking from me, considering I'm also using kbin and beehaw now.
I read The Verge's latest interview with Steve Huffman here and it seems as though the Reddit blackout is having little to no effect. It also seems as though the communities at large don't really care and will probably just use the official app or don't really know there are 3rd party ones. So it seems this will pass and be...
This will end exactly the same way the Twitter -> Mastodon thing ended.
Reddit will continue. A slightly worse Reddit, with more bots, more low-effort content, and less quality OC.
Moderation will degrade slightly as the admins replace protesting moderators with more obedient ones, and/or communities lose interest and use the new "voting" (lol) systems to pick admins which will give them the reliable dopamine hits.
A small percentage of Redditors, especially the power users, will move on. A small percentage in Reddit terms is a tidal wave for any other platform. Some percentage of that number of Redditors leaving will come here.
Lemmy & Kbin will experience growing pains. Issues caused by scaling up infrastructure, instance to instance friction, etc. These will get resolved with time. When things settle, we will have a fraction of reddit's userbase, but neither will we need more. We'll have enough to have stable, engaging communities which will slowly grow.
In other words, a mirror reflection of the Mastodon story.
#Lemmy now has 135,369 accounts. That is tracking with my expectations.
But while #Kbin had ~7,000 accounts yesterday, it’s just shot up to 30,930 accounts today.
While Lemmy is the 5th most used server software on the Fediverse, Kbin is now in 10th place and it’s growing at a faster rate than Lemmy.
A few days ago, I predicted that the #RedditMigration would result in 150,000-300,000 new accounts being created on the Fediverse. That expectation has already been met.
This #RedditMigration is fundamentally changing the course of the Fediverse. It’s moved the Fediverse from being primarily about microblogging to having more eclectic use cases.
While the #TwitterMigration validated that decentralized social media can appeal to millions of people, the #RedditMigration has validated that decentralized social media has man varied applications – both in the software and use case sense.
keep in mind that there's already lots of content coming in from Lemmy, and kbin can be another way to access that content in a manner some people prefer. the biggest advice for everyone is to be the change you want to see. we can't just be lurking consumers if we want to be here, we have to start commenting and posting all we can
That makes more sense to me now, I've been using Kbin and I wasn't sure what this post was talking about. It feels like the posts are switching out from hot at a good rate here, always something new on the front page.
I thought I'd never want to leave that party... the smell of shit is too strong though, and I'm never going back. I'm marching into kbin with a better party hat!
I've been trying Kbin more the past couple days, and I'm really liking it a lot more now that I understand what's going on. Seems like it might be helpful if there was a quick (optional) onboarding process for new users to point out the basics of the interface and how to find content.
I would use this site a heck of a lot more if I actually saw when people replied to one of my "article" posts. But right now my notifications sit empty unless I tag a user or they tag me....
Ok, #RSSFeed being built into both #Kbin and #Lemmy makes moving a lot easier as part of the #redditmigration just point the feed at the rss for Magazine (Kbin) or Community (Lemmy) and read away in your RSS feed reader of choice.
@testing Why I think I'd like to see #Kbin use Magazine specific #RSS feed files. Right now it looks like it has a sitewide RSS function that just pulls the data from a database, but then the #RSSFeed generated all are named a generic kbin.social even though the data properly displays for the Magazine feed. Right now, ANY magazine you add to a RSS feed reader will have the generic kbinservername Title. That feed seems correct though. You can just rename the feed kbin.social magASEAN
With Federation on pause for now on kbin.social, I wonder how the fediverse will handle all the outgoing and incoming federation requests then. Reminds me of the Twitter migration and things stalled for a few days.
@cjerrington You were my first "message" on Kbin, I shall not forget you.
(Actually my memory isn't that great so i probably will.)
But thanks for the explanation!!
On my blog, #FOSSAcademic, I've done "FOSS finds" posts. But now that I'm starting to focus intently on #AlernativeSocialMedia, I am changing it to "ASM Update."
FYI, Lemmy and Kbin are Progressive Web Apps, meaning you can install them as regular apps to your phone's home screen
On iOS: tap the share button in browser => add to home screen...
Almost 5K Pirates migrated to lemmy. We're now 4th in lemmy communities browser! (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
Incredible growth. just goes to show how little we needed to be in Reddit....
Kbin.social passes 30k Monthly Active Users
It's still tiny numbers in the scheme of things, but also quite a big number for a site that had ~30 users this time last month....
Spam and porn are flooding kbin already

Why does the frontpage of kbin.social work so much better than any other server?
When I visit kbin.social, I see new posts regularly. On other servers posts stay on the frontpage for multiple days. This is also true if I switch their sorting to "hot". So that is probably not the difference....
Reddit's largest subreddit, r/funny, has opened back up. (reddark.untone.uk)

How much of an impact is the protest really having on Reddit?
I read The Verge's latest interview with Steve Huffman here and it seems as though the Reddit blackout is having little to no effect. Is there a way to see kbin microblogs from Lemmy?
This has probably already been asked before, but:...

Another bug on /kbin - comments are multiplying. (kbin.social)
On the linked page, a set of replies has multiplied 5-fold
