Y’all: I have been wrestling with kbin on the fedia.io instance, but I want to take a step back and give some perspective. Kbin is new, it’s growing crazy fast, and it really wasn’t in a place to support the migration from Reddit. Despite that, @ernest has been working his tail off knocking down issues and helpings instance admins.
Reddit certainly seems to be tripling down on their position and I think kbin is shaping up to be a worthy alternative. If you like kbin (on whatever instance you use it on) and want to see it grow, may I ask that you throw some money Ernest’s way? (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin)
I want to publicly thank Ernest for kbin and for his contributions to our growing fediverse community.
@jerry@ernest
Kbin is absolutely our best reddit alternative right now. Lemmy is good and I'm glad it exists, but it feels more alpha than anything right now.
Kbin on the other hand feels more polished. It needs work, definitely, but you can feel the potential when you use it.
Thanks to all the devs out there working to build the future. Who knew it's what we'd need in 2023 😂
The https://kbin.social server is now federating with the Fediverse. You can follow/interact with kbin.social magazines & users from other Kbin servers, Mastodon & rest of the Fediverse. For example the TIL magazine is at @TodayILearned, the lead dev of Kbin is at @ernest
There's a new Kbin server at https://readit.buzz which is run by the same people as the Universodon.com Mastodon server. It's open for signups, just click "log in" and then "register".
@feditips@ernest@TodayILearned I don't understand how this federation works cross fedi-software. Like could I follow a kbin subkbin(?) on mastidon and vice verse??
@maegul@stux@ruud for now, I'm not directly involved in the development of kbin or lemmy. However, I'm almost certain that the issues that lead to me making this recommendation have been raised / are reasonably easy to see.
I think it's really just a case of very alpha software needing a bunch more time to mature a bit before throwing thousands of users at it.
So ummm, weird thing about this is that the cat is out of the bag already, right? @ruud , you’re already running the biggest instance that many are happily moving to, and Reddit users know of lemmy as the alternative on the fediverse.
The Star Trek subreddit (r/startrek and two other related subreddits) literally moved over to their own instance, indefinitely it seems (startrek.webpage).
So, though it’s beyond the scope of your review, and maybe expertise, what can and should be done now by users, admins and devs alike?
How bad is it and what sort of problems are likely to arise (I know you haven’t published your report yet, but a basic heads up maybe)? Is there anything that users and moderators can do collectively at a cultural level to cover the gap?
Have you contacted the devs of lemmy and kbin (as overrun as they may be)?
As naive as this may sound, are there platform format differences that play into this and if so how (I’m thinking about threads being more publicly visible and having up and downvotes as some sort of signal).
#ActivityPub is super cool once you see it in action.
For instance, you can visit the new StarTrek lemmy server here: https://startrek.website/c/startrek. Looks like a reddit sub with posts, threaded comments, upvotes, &c.
OR you can follow the same server on Mastodon @startrek.
Every thread and comment shows up as a boosted post.
Cool, right? Now, say you find a comment that you want to reply to. Post through your favorite Mastodon app, and that feeds right back to the thread on the #Lemmy server! 🤯
Yeah they DEFINITELY aren't the same communities. For lemmy and kbin instances (the two reddit-like softwares on the fediverse) communities are like subreddits but they are subreddits specific to that particular website/instance (startrek.website, lemmy.wordl). Many different lemmy instances/websites (and kbin instances/websites for that matter too) can have their own /c/politics, they are entirely separate entities that just happen to share a name.
A bit confusing, not gonna lie lol, but I think it ultimately makes sense as a way to structure things.
Also kbin calls subreddits "magazines" and an example of a subreddit on a kbin instance is https://kbin.social/m/gaming
Looks like #Lemmy and #Kbin keep being mentioned together, which to me suggests we might have averted "mastodonization" of the #threadiverse — i.e. a situation where the whole network gets identified with a single piece of software. 🎉
@rysiek i ‘d be happy if the diaspora could find in their new home something with more form and function to the platform they left behind. Considering it all one mixed bag, one yet more identical marvelous separate but equal sameness whether Mastadon, Lemmy or Kbin , etc, is not going to satisfy.
So after a few days of lurking Kbin and trying to understand the marvelous world of the Fediverse, I've tried keep some mental notes of the struggles I've had and some spontaneous areas of improvement that I personally would like to see....
Yeah, I broadly agree with you, but I actually strongly with you about the terminology here. Magazines should just be called Communities.
Other instances use community, and the fediverse will only be more confusing to newcomers if every instance has their own cute word. (Imagine if there were kbin Magazines, Lemmy SubLems, and Beehaw Hives. Try teaching that to your friends lol.)
Joining a community is the more correct metaphor here. I can hang out in a community, I can interact with others in my community, I can even contribute to my community. That's what we're aiming for here right, lots of small-medium communities.
On the other hand, a magazine is not something I really interact with. I do subscribe to it, and then I'll read it when it's delivered. But I can't say I've ever contributed to a magazine, let alone had a conversation with the contents of one.
I know ernest is just doing his best here lol, so he has plenty on his mind as is. But I really think that switching magazine to community sets the correct tone for every user here.
Whew. It's not open for registrations and I don't have the qualifications to open it up, but my #kbin instance has been running for over a week, close to 10 days now. The things my little instance has seen in that time has been INTENSE.
My little instance was just one of about 6, or 7 kbin instances when it finally went live, but now #fedidb lists 28 kbin servers with more coming online constantly.
Helping others where I can with information about how I managed to get mine running as well as helping others learn about #kbin has been a wild and intense experience.
I know that with more people coming to kbin that the little part that I played in these last few days will echo for a while across the #fediverse as more people join kbin and other platforms.
@dannekrose
Just curious, based on your experience what do you recommend users looking to get into #kbin do? I've seen folks say all the servers are way overloaded, should we be running our own instances, waiting a month or two...?
I often feel like replies are cringe on fedi and I can never tell if someone wants replies. so that's at least one thing I'm optimistic about for kbin or Lemmy. it's nice to have posts that are clearly designed for conversation threads.
I've noticed that on desktop, using my lemmy.world account led to me either getting signed out on certain instances or just not being able to interact with them; on Kbin however, the fact that I can see and interact with this post and ones on --for example-- lemmy.blahaj.zone is a good sign. I'll still keep both accounts esp since Jerboa doesn't allow kbin accounts on there, so I'll keep experimenting with this
So was looking at Kbin and I can't seem to find a masterlist of instances like I could with the version of fedi on this platform
Does anyone have a good list of instances to join? preferably ones that are lgbtq, trans spaces that aren't full of tankies and don't federate with bigots?
Is there a better way to display images? I always get some weird zoomed in version of the image and have to click on it to have it load the whole thing. It'd be nice if I could see the whole image next to the headline. Is that currently possible?
I wonder if i want to reply to posts on #kbin with the instance i currently post from or with my kbin.social account. Both would be possible. Dunno which would be better though.
zio-http, tapir, and psql. React/typescript on the FE because I already know it and don't want to learn another FE framework.
But I'm pumped lemmy is in rust as it gives me an excuse to fool around with it. Equally saddened kbin is php as I will use that as an excuse to never fool around with it.

When I click a federated link my web browser goes to the other site. How can I view it from kbin?
Basically the title. I want to click the link to a lemmy site or whatever and it shows up within kbin.
Daily random discussion - Jun 16, 2023 (lemmy.world)
Welcome to the RD thread!...
what does it mean that Beehaw "defederated" from lemmy.world?
I thought I understood, but I still have Beehaw content in my feed, so I guess I don't understand after all... Can someone dumb it down for me?
What is your guys' experience with Lemmy and Kbin interaction
This post comes from Lemmy, so at least we know that part works lmao....
Welcome to Switzerland
This community should act as an replacement for all r/switzerland reddit refugees or generally users, who want to talk about switzerland on lemmy.
Viewing pictures in kbin

YSK not to post everything to the !lemmy.world community
Why YSK: to help keep the platform in order and help make the admins and mods' work easier....
If you had to make a reddit/kbin-like clone, what tech stack would you use?
Thinking of starting a personal project to keep busy. I'm very good with databases and SQL but interested in branching out to more full-stack...
