32 years ago today on May 5 1992, one of the greatest games of all time (and forever my favorite first person shooter), Wolfenstein 3D, was released. I wrote about it for the list of 20 video games I can't stop thinking about (https://spacetimetech.wordpress.com/2024/04/06/20-video-games-i-cant-stop-thinking-about). I still play it regularly. Sometimes weekly. Killing digital Nazis is always fun and therapeutic.
back when I read Masters of Doom over a decade ago, i was fascinated by the brief mention of carmack's "Adaptive Tile Refresh" technique used for Commander Keen, that allowed smooth scrolling on EGA cards
i never found a very satisfying technical (or conceptual) description of how it worked, and I just found out that @fabinou wrote up a fantastic post which did exactly that
Since you apparently just imagined the Pharaoh's Tomb, why not explore and find the treasures of a viking fortress found within the ice or something.
But you get a little overworld map this time with some choices as to which order you play the levels in. Collect a lot of ice picks to break the ice or start a conversation about it.
NASA keeps sending astronauts to Mars but they never come back. I mean you'd probably want to stay off of Earth too.
An ancient DOS single-screen platformer that only has its own level design to carry it. You mean there's CGA games worth playing? 4 colors are all you need.
Push blocks, collect the letters of MARS, and zap some aliens. Lives are limitless!
Shareware version 1.0 of Duke Nukem 3D was first released on this day (January 29) in 1996.
Today, you can download it or play it online in your browser (both free) here, via one of my all-time favorite sites on the web (that also has SO MANY other games), DOSGames.com: https://dosgames.com/game/duke-nukem-3d.
Last night, I discovered two quirky, little "Jump'n'Run" games from the early 1990s:
"Secret Agent" and "Crystal Caves" from Apogee (later known as 3DRealms). I never played these back in the day, but they seem to be fun games, so I added them to my retro library. Simple, but pleasant EGA graphics!
Btw: I also just purchased both of them on GOG.com... as classic and modern "HD" versions.
Back in business, the Apogee Symphony MKII is now integrated into my studio and working like a charm. Will probably retire the Apogee Quartet that has been my workhorse for over a decade. So glad that I have made this switch from the Presonus Quantum 4848. The Symphony is vastly superior. #gearsquad#apogee#symphony#studio#recording#music
We have lift-off, the Apogee Symphony MKII is connected and operating. I've set it as the primary output for my computer, although I can easily change output devices. Tomorrow I'll start the process of connecting the DB25 connectors for all 32 inputs & outputs and start testing. #gearsquad#apogee#symphony#recording#studio#music
Well the Presonus Quantum 4848 is removed from the rack and awaiting its final disconnection from my system. The Apogee Symphony arrived at the L&M Ontario depot from California a couple of days ago, so it should be here soon. Getting excited now. #gearsquad#studiogear#studio#recording#presonus#apogee
For once, Discord actually proved useful for something! I checked the Apogee server for news on the Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure HD remaster that's coming soon (I'm a HUGE Cosmo's fan and I'm BEYOND excited for this remaster) and I found out that one of my favorite YouTube channels, DOSgamert (https://www.youtube.com/@Dosgamert - if you're into old PC/DOS games, seriously, check out his channel), did a livestream of a little bit of the upcoming Cosmo's HD beta a few days ago!
About 50% of the way through my studio reorganization now. The mixer is totally tested & fully operational, including every connected cable. Now working through all the outboard gear & cables, starting with my mics.
I think I'm approaching the end of episode 1: "Dr. Mangle's Lab"! :0)
"Legacy:
Apogee released the game as freeware on December 23, 2005 as a "Christmas present", and the full game can be downloaded from the Apogee website. On 23 October 2014, 3D Realms released 3D Realms Anthology, which includes Bio Menace".. from Wikipedia
31 years ago today, on May 5th 1992, the legendary Wolfenstein 3D was released for DOS. I remember my friend had it on his PC (probably the next year, 1993, when I was 13), and my family had a Mac Performa that I eventually put it on too!
Not surprisingly, lots of people still play Wolf 3D today and are dedicated to making amazing custom maps and levels for it. There's just very few things as satisfying as killing digital Nazis. I still play the DOS version sometimes myself, and I recently put the 360 version on my Series X (one of the only good console versions- the SNES one is terrible!)
And sure, you could buy the original for just a dollar or two on Steam, but you can download it for FREE (or play it for free in your browser via DOSBox) at one of my all-time favorite sites on the web, DOS Gaming dot com, here: https://dosgames.com/game/wolfenstein-3d.
