After stumbling around with #arduino and #esp32 #embedded stuff for some years, I now have the time and energy to learn #C++ properly. Time to actually understand what I've been doing all these years. Understanding types and the standard library is appealing.

I've always avoided C and its children but for embedded stuff it's kind of unavoidable. I'm looking at YOU ESPHome Display Lambdas: the power of C++ gimped by the annoyance of YAML!

Does anyone have course recommendations for learning C++ pretty much from scratch? It could be targeting embedded dev but a generalist course would be fine too I think.

Finally got an end to end of my little telnet project working yesterday--- with an Ethernet shield to .

It worked, but my fake telnet on the Arduino required a little tweaking. "What do you mean control codes are in band?"

The solution is delightfully not spec compliant. 😉

Having a wonderful time writing MIDI controller UI code with only a rotary knob and button for input controls and a 7 segment display for feedback.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

This is what I have: When you scroll the knob it shows the number on the display (with brightness set dim) and then when you press the knob/button
it sends that value via MIDI output and then flashes 4 time and shows the number at full brightness.

The flashing lets you know you've set the value and sent it.

And "dim" means you are selecting a value and "bright" means you have chosen the value to send.

Does that make sense?

Does anyone know where I can find cheap to USB adapters, or if it is easy to build one using an / ? I have an Extended II I would like to put to good use.

I found only 2 relevant listings on AliExpress, and for some reason both are priced around US$ 400 each! 😱

Did someone tried simply connect a water pump to ? I did. Arduino just controlling a relay (or MOSFET). Engine and Arduino has different power source.
Despite of it water pump producing so much what leads to Arduino random restarts.

As generator of random numbers it works perfectly. But I've expected something else :(

Some advices? Water pump is plastic and I can't solder any capacitors on it.

I'm once again asking for some to solve a philosophical dilemma.

When cutting wood on a bandsaw with a fence, which side of the board is better to keep against the fence, the narrower or the wider (assuming both sides can pass through the saw throat)?

I usually keep the wider against the fence, but I don't know if it's the best practice (I push the piece against the fence not farther than the blade, or it will pinch it, of course).

My first mac was an iMac 20" bought in September 2008. It's 16 years old and hasn't been powered on in 8 years but still looks new.

So, why not give it new life as a dedicated emulator machine? 🕹

It has a 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo (64-bit) and 4 GB of RAM, which should be good.

The 320 GB HDD was OK, but better transplant the 250 GB SSD upgrade out of my first macbook.

When I first booted Ubuntu LTS off an USB stick, I was suprised how smooth it ran. Plus, it supported all the hardware! 😮

1/3 🧵

The iMac showing its innards, but stil with the LCD panel attached (the disk drive is behind it, so it had to be dissassembled next). It has never been opened, so it was pretty dusty, and it smelled of old rags.

carlosefr,

The arcade version of Arkanoid is hard as it is, but with a joystick/gamepad is next to impossible to play. 🕹️ 💢

Originally it used a rotary controller (spinner). On an emulator, you can play it with a mouse... but that just doesn't feel right. And, with my setup, not very practical. 🖱️ 🤷‍♂️

So, I decided to build my own spinner controller. I think it turned out quite nice...

1/2 🧵

My homemade spinner controller in it's final form. It's a black box with an arcade "fire" button (works as the mouse button) and a continuous rotation knob (controls the mouse's horizontal axis). In this photo there's also a (firmware controlled) blue LED visible on the front side, which indicates the device is connected. The top face has the arkanoid logo and some decorations on a blue background, printed on slighly glossy photographic paper.
The arcade version of Arkanoid running on my 2008 iMac. Yes, the iMac's screen is annoyingly reflective.
