Built the to adapter based on Matt Medsker's guide. Pretty easy and cheap, just a 2.0, a female S-Video connector and a 1K resistor. Works like a charm!

Added a 3D printed case and label for looks. Now I just need to find a way to fit the huge Extended II on my narrow desk. 😅

Does anyone know where I can find cheap to USB adapters, or if it is easy to build one using an / ? I have an Extended II I would like to put to good use.

I found only 2 relevant listings on AliExpress, and for some reason both are priced around US$ 400 each! 😱

Electronics Friends, do you want/need any Teensy LC boards? I found a stash of about 20 in my shop. (Will sell at original cost.)

@42GB

It is very cool - I haven't done much with it yet (as I sadly bricked my with an unrelated experiment), but it was super simple to make an effects unit with it.

I did upload a quick demo of using it as a delay at the time:

I since then got myself another Teensy, so I might have to revisit soon!

Help! What's the best way to bond wire to a nail?

I want to make a magnetic switch where if a piece of iron is touching two magnetized surfaces, it completes the circuit, and a micro controller notices. I think I can make the surfaces from nail heads and magnets in a 3D printed housing. Is there a good way to attach hookup wire to a nail? Solder? Crimp? Other?

Completely different ideas?

Thank you.

@Siff The electronics are assembled now. Not the cleanest, but acceptable.

The metal plate is a cover for a ceiling junction box. It's a heatsink for the LEDs. I ground out a hole using a Dremel cutoff wheel -- that was the best tool I had on hand. And I dropped it while the thermal adhesive was wet. That's why it's smeared all around.

Still, I'm my own worst critic. It's just fine, and I'm sure the recipient will love it.

Underside of the assembly in the last photo. On the bottom of the steel plate, a Teensy LC is attached with 3M Dual-Lock™ tape. A power MOSFET is also attached with Dual-Lock tape, and a piece of orange electrician's tape is under the MOSFET's pins. Several pieces of hookup wire connect the Teensy, the MOSFET, the LED ring, and the two studs in the dark printed assembly, which isn't really visible here -- it's on the top side.

@kbob@chaos.social avatar

@Siff And here's some video. It still works.

N.B., those screws are placeholders. The full assembly will use longer screws with bigger heads (or washers).

The same assembly as in previous posts. I drop a paperclip onto the stainless studs, and the LED ring lights up. I remove the paperclip, fumbling slightly, and the LEDs fade away.

@Siff This is a desk lamp.

When it has some scrap, it lights up. When I take the scrap away, it goes dark.

My cousin works for the manufacturer, and he wanted it for his desk. He hasn't seen it yet.

Just found out the hard way that Linux kernel 6.6 is borked with Logitech keyboards. Fun time trying to fix that without proper input. Back on 6.5.9 and everything is Gucci.

@dermoth @CarverDethly that's annoying tbh.

I mean you can OFC take a look at the matrix and reverse-eingineer the button presses for QMK/TMK and hook up a or to it...

I haven't really made a proper post about my first solo and Faircamp-exclusive E.P, so it's time to rectify that:

It's a collection of my jams, recorded between August 2021 and April 2022.

Stylistically I'd say it's , ranging from , , to .

Here's the long overdue video for track 5 on my EP, entitled Werk It (it was my first proper Moog Werkstatt track).

It also features a as a serial to USB host MIDI converter, so I could use my JP8000's arpeggiator with the Werkstatt (via an Arturia Beatstep as MIDI to CV converter) and a weird DSP Effects unit from China.

As always, trailer below, full vid+info at

Full EP at https://faircamp.axwax.eu/axwax-dawless-jams-1/ 🤖🔈🎶

Trailer of my live DAWless jam called Werk It. A Roland JP-8000's arpeggiator is connected via MIDI to a breadboard with a Teensy 3.6, a few resistors and an optocoupler on it. The Teensy is connected to an Arturia Beatstep via USB MIDI, whose MIDI output controls an Electron Model:Samples groovebox on the far left on the screen. This in turn syncs a Behringer TD-3 synth. The arpeggio controls a Moog Werkstatt via the Beatstep's CV output. Its audio output is then routed through a DIY FX unit inside a cardboard box labelled AxFX v1.0. This is very spartanic and only has a 2 digit LED display and an encoder knob to select the preset. As the FX unit's output is 100% wet I use a small black mono mixer to send the Werkstatt's dry output to both the unit and to my main mixer (not pictured). The main beat and bass are all produced by the Model:Samples, a second synth line later on in the track (see full video) is produced by the TD-3, whose output goes through my MIDI-synced AxDelay (see track 3's video for details). Parts of me can be seen twiddling knobs and wiggling my bum.

Ok, let's see if I can make this screen work. Bought it from AliExpress and there seems to be many versions with slightly different protocols.
The first thing I found out was that it won't probably work with the SmartLED shield I bought and the Teensy 4
Maybe a RPi or an FPGA will be better to start
