Woken up to a warm and breezy morning and a cruise ship with a slightly Ancient Greek vibe docked in the bay. The plan is to walk off our breakfast then take the shuttle boat to the hotel’s private islet. Our taxi driver last night was telling us how Aruba has its own currency (although everywhere accepts US$) and its own parliament, but the Dutch governor still sits above parliament. He said he liked the quasi-autonomous status and that Aruba does not want to become fully independent from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Arubans get a full NL passport and freedom of movement in the EU. He was a white guy with a Dutch accent, I wonder if people from other communities feel differently

It should have been on the front pages, but due to global events, it has been overlooked.

A large oil spill near the island of Tobago, caused by an abandoned vessel on Feb 7, 2024, triggered a massive clean-up effort as the spill affected approximately 15 kilometers of Tobago's coastline, damaging a reef and potentially contaminating the island's fish and food supply.
The ecological impact is still unknown.

St Vincent and the Grenadines court upholds laws criminalizing gay sex (www.theguardian.com)

Activists decry ruling by top court as ‘a travesty of justice’ after two men sought to strike down colonial-era laws. A top court in St Vincent and the Grenadines has upheld laws that criminalize gay sex, in a blow to activists who have long decried the violence the LGBTQ+ community has faced on the conservative Caribbean...

Mysterious oil spill sparks national emergency in Trinidad and Tobago (edition.cnn.com)

An overturned vessel has caused a huge oil spill along Trinidad and Tobago’s coastline, in what the Caribbean country’s prime minister described as a “national emergency” on Sunday. I've seen Queen Angelfish on every trip to the Caribbean, but this is my best picture to date. They are quite large and have an amazing collection of colors and patterns. Sometimes they follow feeding turtles around and munch on whatever the turtle stirs up that doesn't make it into its mouth.

I was taking a picture of a turtle scratching on a rock when our dive guide came over to me and made some very emphatic hand signals at me and motioned for me to follow. When we arrived, I figured out what his hand signals meant - this pair of colorful lettuce were mating! The photo was tricky to capture because they were in a cut between the rocks with quite a bit of surge.

Yellowhead jawfish are one of my favorite creatures to photograph, but they take a lot of patience. They are often quite cautious and will retreat into their burrows, but if you give them some space and remain calm they will sometimes come out and take a look.

", the and countries are being pummeled by that have increased in size by 80 percent over the past four decades, according to a first-of-its-kind global trend study led by China’s Hohai University."

That's 20 percent each decade. Worldwide, hurricane wave height went up only 3 percent per decade. So the Americas are at a lot more risk.
