With the end of the month coming up, I wonder what will be the fate of #Cohost as their funding is about to dry up. Will they shutdown or somehow miraculously survive another day with last minute funding and delay the demise, since their operation is not sustainable.
Apparently, there is an analysis on Cohost's financial situation, the tr:dr: Cohost is terribly mismanaged with the high salary making the thing very unprofitable.
Also, running a business with a bunch of friends, probably not a good idea.
With Cohost's future in question, if you are on Cohost, feel free to invite them to the Fediverse.
Note: We have no presence on Cohost.
>With Cohost's future in question with their investor disappearing, which can affect the existence of the site, If you know any Japanese media fandom or creators who are looking to move to the Fediverse, we do have plenty of capacity (thanks to the recent migration to a more powerful server). Each have large character limits.
>
>Sakurajima is the Mastodon server I started as an alternative to the birdsite. The aim is to build a safe, inclusive, and fun Japanese media fandom and creator community like we have back in the early 2010s and late 2000s. We have a diverse moderator team and of course, it’s run by an Asian American. We have a good number of creators on our server.

>Sakurajima Mastodon: https://sakurajima.moe
Sakurajima Social (Misskey/Sharkey)- https://sakurajima.social.
>
>Urusai Social, who we are close to is an option, but has a smaller character limit, but a good community. We have them in our bubble timeline (hopefully the Bubble timeline feature for GlitchSoc will be a reality soon as the admin of Wet Dry World is working on that) - https://urusai.social
>
>For general fandom (other than Japanese media), https://blorbo.social may be a good choice.

>Note: We do not recommend big servers like Mastodon Social, Art, and online.
Users here who have a Cohost blog may request a blog at Yoshino Garden without a waiting period, you just need to be a member of our servers or Urusai Social.
I find it laughable that Cohost dismisses the Fediverse as an alternative and think they are the superior option
the fediverse is dependent on volunteer labor all over the place
Yet they are still burning through money while paying their workers high salaries. They only survived this long since they are relying on loans from an “investor” (although I thought was from VC, but apparently from a friend who believed in the project, which makes it seem even worse) and begging their users to subscribe. The fact of the matter is that social media is just unprofitable, especially when you want to build a huge centralized platform. There is not that many people who are willing to pay for it and of course ads do not bring in as much money.
Not to mention, they are paying 10k a month for servers to host 30k monthly users, which is just not substainable. 10k users for a Mastodon or Misskey instance will probably be a couple hundred dollars for a dedicated or cloud server. If you have like 100 people donating say $5 a month, you can probably cover all your cost easily and still have a lot of money left over. Compared to Cohost, they just aren’t sustainable as their costs are too high and they think they can pay their workers a lot while they continue to burn through money.
While they view volunteering aspect of the Fediverse as a bad thing, this should be reviewed as what communities were back in the 2000s and 2010s when we had forums. This time, the communities are interconnected, which give the same feeling of a social platform without having the burden of having high costs from hosting a big platform. Sure, moderation is a challenge since you have communities having different rules (excluding the drama that is included with it), but there should be people who are willing to help out. There is not much sense of a community on large servers like Mastodon Social and centralized platforms like Cohost, Twitter, Facebook, Bluesky, etc. There is no local or bubble feed where you can interact with others that are part of the community.
The end of the day, the energy is best spent on the Fediverse. After all, even a tech savvy person can run their own server for the cost of a subscription. The cost of hosting big platforms are just too high and not too many people are willing to pay for it.
The same issue applies to Bluesky, which is just cosplaying as a decentralized network. Sure, you can host your data, but you need to connect to their indexers to get posts from other users, which is centralized. Of course it’s going to get enshittified since, you can’t be profitable just from selling domain names and it’s not easy to get VC money as, well interest rates are high and the end of easy money.
That said, I do not want to disparage their efforts as they didn’t go down the path of enshittification. However, if they embraced the decentralized approach by embracing ActivityPub with an open source solution that users can host while having a paid, managed hosting option, maybe they would be in better shape.
it is genuinely darkly amusing to me that Tumblr is probably going to outlast Cohost given the latest Cohost financial update, i.e., the "our one investor won't pick up the phone and we will run out of money in three weeks" one
TL;DR: I am an #artist , #musician , and #writer looking for work. If you need a creative on your team, consider checking out my portfolios. I’d be super excited to work with you to make something!!
Boosts are appreciated ❤️
Longer post on Cohost. You do NOT need a #Cohost account to view this post.
I know that every social media platform has its specialty and doesn't need to do everything, but Cohost has spoiled me in being able to do damn near anything I want for a post, even doing stupid HTML stuff.
At the very least I wish every platform supported, like, Markdown so I could italicize stuff
I would sincerely love to know why Firefox is systematically showing me a blank page instead of #Cohost :|
I mean, I know that it's probably because of an extension but, pfff… u_u
Seeing folks suggesting Tumblr users moving to the Fedi to try cohost instead...
And look, I know instances here can be iffy on funding now and then, but why send folks to the place that has actively said they don't have enough money to function and will cease existing if one person stops basically gifting huge numbers so they can function?
Perhaps we should suggest stable options for people so they are less likely to need to move again?
My situation has just drastically changed. You do NOT need a #Cohost account to read this post.
TL;DR: My father is now at risk of losing his job, which means my parents are going to keep me in this house to take my money. My mother continues to try to scare me out of moving out. I have nowhere to go. I need guidance. Please help me.
So in Tumblr many people is talking about #Tumblrdying and talking about Bluesky and Cohost
Sadly fediverse, specially Mastodon doesn't have a good view for many tumblr people, they see it as a weird social media that can't be understandable :neofox_0_0:
Exciting updates for #Idosra - I've been working with @musicvsartstuff and she has written some pretty epic music for the game so far. The game's completion is still a bit too far to set a definitive release date, but it's coming sooner than later.
I'm thinking of starting a #blog sometime soon. Mostly just to get back into the habit of writing regularly and hopefully connect with some people. I was thinking of maybe using #Tumblr, #Cohost, or #Substack. Are there any reasons I should or shouldn't use those platforms? Any other platforms you'd recommend instead?
Updated. I think I'm kinda spreading myself a little thin, but I think it's possible in a year or two's time, a few of these will be going away on their own.
