This is my ‘Folk and Bluegrass’ playlist on my personal YouTube channel. I curate the playlist, with 263 live music videos at least weekly. It’s one the biggest of the nineteen I curate on my channel. I’ve collected these for over a decade, and without being too immodest I think I did a damn good job. You can hit this playlist, sit back and enjoy for hours, days even. Or just keep it on in the background on shuffle. My gift to you. BTW, if you’re not already spending the $18.99/month (USD) for YouTube premium, you’re missing out. I’d get rid of all my other streaming subs, including Netflix & Prime, before I’d part with my - Just sayin.

50 years ago today, a rehearsal at david grisman’s house in stinson beach for what will become the great american string band, debuting later that weekend, feat. on , richard greene on , (old palo alto pickin’ pal) eric thompson on guitar, possibly billy wolf on bass (or maybe taj mahal?) plus mystery players. only 2 songs circulate from longer recording: https://www.shnflac.net/index.php?page=torrent-details&id=088eb3af7d8dede061d7080e91dd55395d2634da [1/2]

Well, the tip of my thumb has been whittled like wood
The way I'm abusin' the lighter
I'm a-self-medicatin', a-tokin' all day
And a-tryna fight fire with fire
I live by the pipe and I'll die by it too,
Least that's how it seems to me

- the kentucky colonels, feat. scotty stoneman on , live in LA, spring & summer 1965, about a year after was regularly following & taping them. aces picking by clarence & roland white, but stoneman's fiddle (& the instrumentals) are the selling point, sounding infinite/timeless/oceanic for bars at a time. shoulda played with henry flynt! plus, garcia on stoneman. @vinylrecords

- the 2nd (& less all-star) of 2 major label LPs by legend vassar clements, both from '75. though there are some great moves & wild , mostly lands on the country/allmans-y side of western swing. clements is brilliant but there's kinda not enough of him & rest of the band doesn't really grab me. @vinylrecords

- 2 extended live sides by elkhorn & pelt's mike gangloff. gentle raga-ish fields & a mote-storm of sunlight flecks with elkhorn's 6 & 12 string plus appalachian by gangloff. my old description still stands: if someone started a band in the space between "mountains of the moon" & "dark star." https://vhfrecords.bandcamp.com/album/shackamaxon-concert @vinylrecords

La Contredanse - from First Steps by Brown Boots

@musica

🇬🇧 A dazzling duo of fiddle and melodeon. Martin and Clarke and Will Allen make music that's far more than the sum of its parts, you won't want it to stop! Interesting fact -> The accordion became popular in Ireland in the late 19th century and in its ten-key form (known as the melodeon). While the melodeon gained appreciation in the U.S., it is still played in Connemara. Modern accordion players prefer two-row buttons. Modern musicians such as Sharon Shannon, Jackie Daly, and Martin O'Connor have made the Irish accordion a popular medium that matches well with the concertina.

🎧 Buon ascolto! 🎧

Great resource. https://www.loc.gov/collections/henry-reed-fiddle-tunes/about-this-collection/
Fiddle Tunes of the Old Frontier: The Henry Reed Collection presents traditional fiddle tunes performed by Henry Reed of Glen Lyn, Virginia. Recorded by folklorist Alan Jabbour in 1966-67, when Reed was over eighty years old, the tunes represent the music and evoke the history and spirit of Virginia's Appalachian frontier. Many of the tunes have passed back into circulation during the fiddling revival of the later twentieth century.

- home & radio sessions by red cravens & the bray bros., 1964ish, sometimes known as the bluegrass gentlemen, featuring compilation producer john hartford playing on 5 cuts. hardcore 2nd generation , great warm vocal/instrumental blends that aren't too show-offy or shrill. not folkways but a very early rounder record. bonus: stamp from flipside in , where @4CPcomics's father purchased it. the days before shrink wrapped LPs! @vinylrecords

This is a tune that for some reason I thought I learned off the Atlantic Fiddles CD many years ago, but recently when I dug up that recording I didn't find this tune on there, so now I have no idea where I got it from. Anyone else recognize it? It seems it's originally a highland pipe tune.

PS: yes, that's Hudson photobombing with his tail near the beginning of the vid. Of course. @thesession

This is the last part of a Pure Laine fiddle competition in Quebec -- the most intense fiddle contest I've ever seen.

From my friend Chris, who posted this video on FB:

' Contestants take turns playing the A part (16 measures) of a reel of their choice. It has to be in the key indicated by the judge on suggestions from the audience. There can't be a break. And they can't play a tune that has already been played. '

Two great groups jam at my favorite festival held annually on Nova Scotia’s beautiful - best venues, best music, best locals, best drives and a great after show bash at the Gaelic College nightly. All the greats have played there, but the locals often steal the show. The Rankin Family, the Beaton Sisters, the McGillivrays, the MacIssacs, the Barra-McNeils, the list of local notables goes on-and-on. https://youtube.com/watch?v=7npkGfFhO3o&feature=share

If you enjoy - - energetic and just an overall good times and you don’t already know Cape Breton Island’s Beaton sisters, have I got a treat for you. My Celtic Music playlist (one of 19 on my YouTube channel) has well over 300 songs and this particular live performance is one of my all time favorites. There’s a long and heart warming story behind Cape Breton fiddle playing, but that is grist for another post on another day. For now, just listen to this! https://youtu.be/xCSk5waVkxI
