So he spent £6000 instead of £30 by taking a helicopter instead of the train, but he also generated ~1100 kg of CO2 instead of ~10kg per person for the train. (No idea how many people were in the helicopter)

“Sunak uses helicopter for trip that would have taken just over an hour by train”

Helicopter use cannot be casual - it must be a last resort, when there are no other options.

Flying may be bad for the environment, but taking the train in Europe is bad for your bank account, a new study has found.

Rail travel within the Continent remains 71% more expensive than flying, according to research by Greenpeace.

The report compared the prices of flights and trains on 112 European travel routes and found that taking the train was cheaper than a flight in only 23 cases.

Ferry to Surry - we were crossing a river and when the ferry took off, hundreds of birds followed the boat with us. I caught this one over the side of the deck. I love the face and the motion.

Tell Me I'm Wrong: If private jets were banned and the rich people had to fly commercial, Airports and flying in general wouldn't suck nearly as much.

Calling all pilots and #avgeeks

I just stumbled on metar-taf.com, which has a very user-friendly interface and a livestream of real-time WX at any reporting airport.

Not affiliated or anything, just thought I’d pass this along. Search for your airport in upper right corner. Then hit the LIVESTREAM link at top. Enjoy!

The beach near Wizard Hill on San Cristobel Island in the Galapagos (Ecuador) was a fun place to watch blue footed boobies plunge diving for food. To take off from the water they flap their wings and ‘run’ on the water’s surface. For those of you this holiday season...

Analysis of in based on real human close contact behaviors, Journal of Building Engineering

> The average close contact ratio in 9 airport's areas is 25.4 % (ranging from 6.1 % to 55.0 %), with passengers having the highest frequency of close contact in manual check-in areas. During close contacts, the average interpersonal distance in airports is 1.2 m (ranging from 1.1 to 1.4 m), being shortest in boarding areas. Face-to-face close contact is highest in charging areas, with a percentage of 46.9 %. "Private jets belonging to 200 celebrities, CEOs, oligarchs and billionaires have spent a combined total of 11 years in the air since the start of 2022. The carbon footprint of all those flights – a jaw-dropping 44,739 journeys – would be the equivalent of the total emissions of almost 40,000 Britons." https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/nov/21/the-jet-set-200-celebrities-aircraft-have-flown-for-combined-total-of-11-years-since-2022

I'am now flying so rarely, that when it happens I am faster to realise the privileged view you get to see in exchange of a few hundreds bucks:
points of views that have been impossible to several hundred thousands of generations of homo (homines) sapiens...except the last two or three, and we are the end of this list.

Awesome!

Budapest to Lyon: Why I chose to take a night train with my 6 year-old son instead of a flight

It was my six-year-old son who figured out a way to make that happen. Engrossed in a picture book about trains, he came across one that depicted a family sleeping peacefully in a couchette.

I decided it was time to give night trains a go.

Among my hobbies, probably the weirdest one is circular slide rules. I was introduced to them 22 years ago when I started flying lessons, and have since branched out from the E6B to non-aviation circular rules. I like them because

  1. they're analogue, and
  2. they remind us of the correct level of precision.

Additionally, they make great fidget toys.
