People need to stop worrying about what is doing to . , at its core, is a very simple thing: rules, dice, paper, pencils, people, time and space, and a lot of snacks and beverages.

The genre transcends its progenitor. Your rules need to govern how to describe a character, how to describe the environment, how to resolve conflicts, and how to handle rewards/progression/improvement. All of it can be and in fact is made up.

No one company or author controls .

was always going to be a very poor caretaker of . gaming is done best when it is done with the primary intention of making a good game, not with the primary intention of making a profit.

Hasbro executives could give an owlbear's arse feathers about what makes a good game or even a good story. All they care about is pushing widgets.

They will kill the golden goose to get at the eggs inside (if they haven't actually done so already). They were always going to.

What will decidedly NOT do is "kill" , not in any sense of the word. They will, eventually sell off the rights to the game, when it stops being profitable, because of their own stupidity.

But, "D&D", in the cultural sense, is a 50 year old industry-defining pasttime. It can't be "killed", even by malicious actors. Its spirit lives on eternally in too many of us for that to happen.

I'm not going to harangue you to "try other games" because I'm mad at , or because I think "other games" are better than (most of them are not), except to say that it can be beneficial for your understanding and enjoyment of the hobby to expose yourself to different ideas about how the key, core features of work in the minds of other people, and to see and know that the things you need to play are really very simple and inexpensive.

Wild to see people on a friend's Facebook post throwing an absolute FIT over Hasbro "reissuing" HasLab stuff today when it's pretty clear from how fast they sold out that they were just clearing out a few spares. Unicron sold out in less than a minute. Victory Saber was gone in two. I'd be surprised if they had more than a dozen of either of them. But no, Hasbro LIED and REISSUED them. 😑

The #Hasbro / #WotC year in review? Undermining some solid releases, including a #DnD movie that didn't suck:

  • The Pinkerton bounty hunter debacle, which terrorized a couple at home over some unreleased Magic cards;

  • Threatening to gut the #OGL for a more for-profit model;

  • Laying off 1,100+ employees, including key personnel from WotC (you know, the only profitable department) just before Christmas;

  • Etc.

Welp, time to put the stuff in the penalty box.

There is a concerning amount of science happening. Hasbro isn't feeling the spirit of the holidays. E3 is officially actually for realsies dead. Google was found guilty.

Ended 2023 by surprising firing more than 1000 staff as a cost cutting measure? Two weeks before Christmas !

And that doesn't even cover all the other shady goings on during the year ??

Great Googly Moogly.

I need a timeline to keep track of this awfulness.

Christ on a shit, how bad do you have to be at your basic job to lay off 1/5th of your employees at a toymaker two weeks before Christmas? I don't have enough goddamned curse words to fully skewer this level of bastard-ass incompetence.

How the fuck is Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks (Noted Incompetent Motherfucker) not discarded like so much tissue paper on Boxing Day? He's obviously not capable of running a hot dog stand, much less one of the largest toymakers in the world.

Noted Shitass Chris Cocks should not only be fired, he should be shunned from society and not allowed to manage anything more complicated than a piggy bank. He clearly doesn't deserve the $9 MILLION DOLLARS he was paid in 2023.

Fuck I wish I could fail that hard and get paid that well.

Hasbro's board is either grossly negligent or also just the dumbest, greediest shits humanity can produce. (it's the second one)

Cocks’ mention that the company broke the glass on decimating their workforce as a last resort fails to account for any reduction in executive salary, bonuses or additional compensation. The sale of the physical office is a drastic move for a company as old and traditional as Hasbro, but leaving 1,100 people without financial security days before Christmas doesn’t exactly lend Cocks and other C-suite members much of a charitable position from which to argue.

    @gbraad I heard the word when I was very young, from their transformers toys.

    When I started playing magic, I didn't realize that WotC is owned by Hasbro in my first year.

    WotC is definitely a milk cow. Without WotC, I guess Hasbro could still survive, as a toy company with very little profit
