Those wanting to try out an alternative to Mastodon, you're welcome to create an account on https://sharkey.world. has a very different layout, but most of the same features as Mastodon, and many features Mastodon hasn't. Just see for yourself, and it's fine to either use it as a second account, or you can decide to migrate your current account to it, if you really like it.

Yes, there is the #AriaApp. It is made for #Misskey but works perfectly as well as with its forks (#Firefish, #Sharkey, #Iceshrimp and so on).
You can found it on F-Droid https://f-droid.org/packages/com.poppingmoon.aria or the APK file on Github https://github.com/poppingmoon/aria

As seen in the first image, handles are broken when there are full stops in the username part of the handle.

The second image is what it looks like on . I'm not sure what's causing this, but it's a little concerning as it means that users can't mention people on Wordpress / BridgyFed or any other platform that uses this format.

The handle is mentioned fine when sent from a Mastodon account, but the link hasn't worked on my Iceshrimp account.

I can still follow the user, I just can't mention them.

I'm going to miss the longer post sizes and better post editing tools in or . instances have some catching up to do in a lot of basic usability.

Oh well, it works, mostly, and I didn't feel like scrounging around for another Firefish or Iceshrimp server (or setting up my own).

Dear , , and users, are links and markdown working for you in apps using the Mastodon API?

For me, apps like moshidon just display raw markdown or link texts without them being clickable...

b, to random

been trying out on a very nice instance - so far the differences might be too subtle for me to really recognize, but it does work very (maybe a little moreso than firefish) smoothly.

15-20 minutes to load last batch. As I mentioned before, one gots to be patient. Lol.

Slow search is not unique to iceshrimp in the fediverse. I have experienced similar things on a large friendica server.

I wonder how iceshrimp's search capabilites would hold up on a server 1000 users or more. Would iceshrimp even want to have software that supports such server size?

Just a note, iceshrimp may have only started to get slow for me after I loaded dozens if not hundreds of results initially.

Is there any way to have my instance fetch posts/notes after they've been sent? For example if I encounter a new person, I can't see any of their posts unless they're pinned. Or is that just a limitation of the fediverse, if your instance didn't see it when it happened, it doesn't exist?

how to have a good time on a guide by me based on my first month here!

  1. buy blahaj
  2. attach blahaj to ceiling fan
  3. film spinning fan with vlahaj attached
  4. edit video to form a nice loop
  5. make video into gif
  6. post that shit with alt-text if you can
  7. check everyone who likes that post, there are cool peeps there, follow them!
  8. enjoy your rich home feed!

That's it! That's the whole guide!

Feditext beta users, today's TestFlight build 69 includes various fixes and workarounds for Firefish and Hajkey.

we will be working with server devs to get some of those fixed on the server side (for Hajkey's case, in Iceshrimp), so that future clients won't have to special-case anything.

known not to work in this release:

  • Hajkey's suggested accounts to follow: displays an error message
  • intermittent foreign key constraint error when browsing Firefish or Hajkey timelines: you don't need to report this one, we're already investigating

I know that people who run servers are probably somewhat frustrated right now, since the project's last stable release was back in July. I do hope Kainoa gets more active and things start rolling again, however I checked the closest alternatives/firefish forks. Another thing that makes open source software great: you never run out of options!

So, still pretty much looks and feels like firefish, but they've added some nice (performance, mostly) improvements and also have better api support. They also plan to do a full rewrite, which is quite an ambitious project. It's certainly a project worth watching.

on the other hand started as a firefish fork (from what I understood) but rebased to v13 (Firefish had cut ties with upstream misskey on v12) and is building on top of that. This is also a great option if you like Misskey's direction but want improvements like post editing.

And finally with , which is in the making and will soon be another option, we're taking a different approach. We'll implement some improvements from Iceshrimp, like the great work they've done on mastodon api support, but in general we won't exactly be taking the "improved misskey" direction. Instead, we'll be using Misskey/Firefish as our starting point, but we also want to simplify some things - as well as build extra functionality on top of the essentials. So some of the less important and useful features will be removed in order to offer a more consistent and user-friendly experience.

More on specific changes we're doing in a few days!

The Sharkey leadership is a little incompetent. 🙄

Join Sharkey dot Org has been OFFLINE for over 2 months. The reason given was hosting issues, and this was before the whole Hetzner drama. Join Sharkey dot Org is supposed to be the gateway for people to learn about Sharkey and how they can join.

The Documentation Page (Wiki) is still up, using the subdomain, Doc dot Join Sharkey dot Org, but the URLs are broken. I have repeatedly reported the broken URLs for over 2 months (both in the Git and on their Discord Server). No one seems to want to address that.

They have a private copy of GitLab located at ActivityPub dot Software, that you cannot find via a search looking for Sharkey (DuckDuckGo, Bing, Google). That is where you can report code changes and fixes, but you would likely not know that unless you stumbled upon the URL somewhere (or someone gave you that URL).

Sharkey raised a lot of money so they can host their own content, safely, and securely. They now own their own physical server and lease the space to have that server housed (hosted) remotely. And while the lead developer promotes that server partially as a minecraft server, Join Sharkey dot Org still remains, OFFLINE.

I have pulled funding from Sharkey and will not be supporting it further until they get their act together. It is a good software, and it is my preferred method to use the Fediverse, but you would assume they would want their website working.
