I have closed the group "FirefishTalk" (renamed to "KeyTalk", which unfortunately only changed the title but not the handle) and created a new group "MisskeyTalk". I hope that interesting threads will also be posted here, which may help users and admins:
A group for users and administrators of the Fediverse service Misskey for questions, discussions, instructions, user experiences, help requests, help and more...
Users and admins of the services Sharkey, Iceshrimp, Catodon, Firefish and similar are also welcome in the group.
#Fediverse question:
Is it just me that has issues following #guppe groups or #lemmy communities on #iceshrimp or #mastodon? Or is this just a problem with ActivityPub microblog platforms?
I'm kinda tempted to move this instance over to #iceshrimp due to the better Mastodon API compatibility, I can't get Icecubes to work on here but on infosec.town which is currently running Iceshrimp it works like a charm and there are lots of noticeable performance upgrades on Iceshrimp too.
After testing Sharkey on my homelab, it seems that Sakurajima Social running it runs a lot smoother than Firefish (also the local timeline actually loads quickly without erroring out).
While I do have to set up Meilisearch in the near future, things are pretty good, although things from Misskey will look different compared to Firefish.
If any Firefish servers want to take the plunge, I did kept a copy of all the steps that we needed to take in a text document. I can publish it in a blog post if there are those who are interested.
After giving this a lot of thought and discussing with the wonderful people that build Iceshrimp, #Catodon will rebase to #Iceshrimp. We feel that it's the right decision for the road ahead, as Iceshrimp is another #firefish fork that focuses in improving performance and they have already done some amazing improvements, like full Mastodon API support. With Firefish's future uncertain, we think it's better to stay closer to an actively maintained project. The two projects will stay distinct, as we have different design goals, but we have a common codebase so we feel this makes sense.
Just to be clear on all fronts and to answer the obvious question in advance, yes, Iceshrimp is also currently doing a full rewrite in C#, which is a few months away, and we haven't decided if we'll adopt this yet - it's a strong possibility, but we're keeping our options open. We're confident they're doing a great job, still, we'll weigh what the best decision for Catodon is on this when it's ready and the time comes.
Just wanted to let you know that this might push Catodon's development back a little, as it's sort of a structural change, but we feel that it's worth it, and that it might be better for the broader community. Catodon development will resume once rebasing to Iceshrimp is finished, and then we'll have better foundations to build this on.
Meanwhile me, also using #Hajkey#Iceshrimp, has #MFM animations turned off and @ada wrote me a bit of CSS to minimise it too cos I can't stand too much of it lol.
We had quite a bit of this here at blahaj.zone back on #Calckey 14 when our MAU rose considerably. A move to #Iceshrimp didn't help. Trying to cut down costs by moving hosting introduced more unforeseen issues. We've lost a fair few people but we're more stable now. We're looking at moving to the #Sharkey fork of #Misskey v13 (which itself is a major revision & rewrite and not compatible with FF/IS) which seems to scale well by the looks of the massive instances that run it. But all this has been a big downer, and a lot of downtime. The reality is English-language forks of Misskey have never been tested at scale and when things go wrong trying to any documentation is difficult and most likely in Japanese. They've usually just commenced with a small single instance with some non-stock features added. I hope our eventual move to Sharkey doesn't come with a similar surprise, but seeing it sticks closely to upstream Misskey I think it might be ok.
Why is #iceshrimp repeatedly reminding me to post an #introduction even though I've already put up quite a posts? Keeps popping up, any time I refresh...
I kinda wish #iceshrimp and/or #sharkey had a tumblr-style queue, I have a ton of unrelated Thoughts but don't want to spam the timeline with them.
It could work if there was a Iceshrimp/Sharkey compatible external client and if they had support for the post scheduling APIs (or just ran in the cloud).
#Csharp rewrite and ditching the #Misskey API... It feels to me like they took one of the factors that led to #Firefish's downfall and said "hey we can do worse than that!" :SanaeConfuzzled:
Sadly it looks like #firefish is going to die a slow unmaintained death now, and I need to pick a successor to run.
#iceshrimp and/or #catodon appear to be the spiritual successors, but I think I'll be waiting to see who publishes and maintains a public Docker image first.
Kinda big day tomorrow as catodon.social's getting updated to our latest dev version, since our announced rebase to #Iceshrimp is finished, which means that, if everything goes well, after tomorrow catodon.social will have all of the performance improvements of Iceshrimp, including full Mastodon API support. It took us back a few weeks but we think it was worth it, and now we can resume development towards our first release. #Catodon
@zotan what's the motivation for using C#/.NET for the re-write of #iceshrimp ? I'm not knocking it; I'm just curious, and the matrix/knowledge base require an account to view.
Hi, is there a way to disable image's alt text showing up in iceshrimp instance? It is little disturbing. I think there should be that option, but I can't find it at settings. #iceshrimp#firefish#askfedi
No matter, how you connect to the Fediverse, be if, for example, Misskey, Sharkey, Ice Shrimp, Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Kbin, or by other means, the Fediverse instance you're using cost money. In the real world, web hosting, bandwidth, and storage space cost, money. And the more members who use and join your Fediverse instance (server), the more resources and the most it cost.
I earned by badge, by reaching out to my administrator, and helping them by donating. And while if it was not required to make a donation or regular contribution, I like using the Fediverse. It is ad-free and decentralized, meaning, someone like Elon Musk, cannot change things for everyone, everywhere, solely on their latest mood swing. So I made the choice to help fund my corner of the collective social media network, known as the Fediverse.
Umzug macht oder muss jedmensch selbst suchen was passen könnte?
There needs to be apps for #iceshrimp, #misskey, #sharkey, #catodon, and any other misskey forks that support reactions and full push notifications on iOS. While the webapp im using on my iceshrimp instance is okay, it cannot be a permanent solution.
Or, it would be great if @IceCubesApp supported push notifications for iceshrimp/misskey forks, but i'm guessing its a server side issue :P
Is there an option on #IceShrimp where I could hide all boosts on a timeline? Or create a new timeline where it could only show posts and replies and not boosts?
I'm having a bit of a difficulty going through my timeline especially when pinched in time so I'd like to read all non-boost first.
