Wondering if wealth inequality is out of control?

Well, Jeff Bezos made over $7.9 million an hour last year.

In just 13 minutes, he made the equivalent of what a typical person earns in a lifetime.

Don't tell me that the rich can't afford a wealth tax.

Saw a newspaper story today about how #Seattle is going to close about 20 schools to plug a budget gap 💔

#Billionaires live in #WA bc there's no #IncomeTax

If they were hoarding anything but wealth we'd recognize how pathological it is but NO we put them on the covers of magazines & kiss their asses

#PSA for #India #IncomeTax filing:

If the e-filing portal insists that you "Please correct the error below" without indicating any error, it might be to do with your address. Especially if there's something about a failed address regex in the console.

Going to the profile settings and updating it fixed it for me.

(And yes, they changed the rules, so you might have to file a different form than what you were filing earlier)

#BoostsAppreciated especially if you know Indian peeps

Another is attempting to destroy our country, plunging us into abject chaos and economic despair. This progressive gentleman wants to repeal the , effectively ending the very notion of from our law books. His argument is basically, "we didn't used to have income tax!", a pathetic appeal to nostalgia. To be clear, would grind to a halt if this clown's dreams came true.

Took a day off to do taxes.

Doing a bunch of other chores and procrastinating on taxes.

Also: it's ridiculous that I need to devote time to doing taxes.

Fiscal drag is not only an issue in .... it also works in the other direction - by not (again) raising the ceiling for the Disabled Facilities Grant (it remains at £30k), its real value since 2008 has fallen by around a third.

What's so stupid, is this grant allows the 'disabled' to live independently at home, and purely pragmatically saves the state money in the medium term as well as delivering real wellbeing to those claiming it to adapt their houses.

votes to expand , beef up

The bill passed the House by a vote of 357 to 70. It would expand eligibility for the credit among the lowest-income & adjust payments for for the 2024 & 2025 filing years.

…The #ChildTaxCredit expansion would ensure that more of the poorest #families — who traditionally can’t claim the credit because they don’t owe any #IncomeTax — would qualify for at least some assistance. It would allow the lowest-income families to claim the credit for each #child; the current credit allows those at the lowest end of the #income spectrum only to receive payments for one child.

So looks to have stepped back from a reduction in (or abandoning) & is now likely to focus on a 1% reduction in headline .

Its all part of his aim to make the UK a 'low tax' economy, but given that for most of us the reason its a 'high tax' economy is because of the fiscal drag of not matching tax allowances to , actually this tax cut won't even make up for the stealth rises engineered by recent Tory Chancellors.

Bur will the media mention this?

Effectively they pay not much more than the cruise industry with ~ 0,8%...

Paying my as a freelancer really gives me the impression that doesn't want me to be a freelancer

boo hoo but really this unnecessarily complicated, i'm over here calculating logarithms to determine overdue instalments that they didn't tell me about - you're just supposed to know the entire tax code

not to mention that the tax code is written very poorly.

you qualify for X if:
a) Condition A
b) Condition B
c) Condition C

But we won't tell you if this is a list of logical OR or AND conditions. Letters are expensive.

cazabon,

@matt This won't help you, but I sympathize completely.

I was purely a freelancer for ~14 years and doing taxes was always a nightmare. If anything, it got worse as time went on.

And then I took a staff position without formally closing my freelance business, so I get to do it both ways.

And then I opened an Etsy shop, and that's a third nightmare.

I think I spent most of three days doing taxes this year. With software.

Researchers estimate that if the top 1% of Americans paid the full amount of taxes they owed, it would raise $175 billion a year.

That’s just UNPAID taxes. Not new or higher taxes.

This is the real looting in America.

As a person who spent his entire professional life in the tax business, i can attest to the below. The rich, not all, but a lot, think rules do not apply to them. And their money allows them to buy politicians who do their bidding. Like cutting the IRS budget and telling the poor and middle class it's for them!
Think the Panama Papers! All those off shore accounts!!
