I'm trying to sign up for men's #cooking #lessons here in #Japan to placate my busy #Japanese wife. While she was away, I made this cheese omelette; beginner's luck! A #community center has me on a waiting list, or I could spill for more upscale lessons. It is astonishing and unJapanese that single-person #households are approaching 40%. #Single #men of all ages have a poor #diet, which exacerbates the #lifespan gap with #women. #Loneliness is also a #health hazard. Many men are #widowed, never #married, or their #wives #divorce them, often after the children become independent and the husband is useless around the house after a busy career. Single men, or married men interested in cooking or helping their wives, possibly fearing their wives' pent-up anger, can find #companionship as well as #survival #skills in cooking lessons. Men's classes start from zero; women #cook and #socialize.

BBC IPlayer if you have access. It is worth a watch, sobering reminders. Not to mention context for some of our modern political and social situation.

Hello education people! I saw some people discussing assignments for the classes they teach where they have the students specifically use ChatGPT for research and then compare it against actual real sources as a way to teach the students that basically, ChatGPT is more trouble than it's worth. Does anyone have any first-hand experience or know someone who has a lesson on this? Anecdotal is fine! My sister is a teacher and desperate for some guidance

Lessons from a friend's wilderness misadventure yesterday:

  1. Having multiple communications devices (ham radio + Inreach Mini) absolutely made the difference between being completely lost in the woods, and not being lost.
  2. Always pack more water than you think you need, in case of getting lost.
  3. Do not cross country travel when lost, backtrack instead.
  4. Know your limits, accept when you need help, rather than making a situation go from bad to worse.

The first identification of victims -- a family of four--lived in this block in -- found in their car not far from their home. This entire corner would have likely been a no-way-to-exit zone with fire/powerlines down, as I identified a couple of days ago.

This is the road they got trapped on, within this block somewhere. Fire would have been crossing from the left, power lines maybe down from the wind too. Hindsight is 20/20, but the only feasible survival move would be to drive through this fence instead, or break through or climb the fence and run and head right, not left..

I am going to do a two thread thing in this pinned post.

One will have a list of lessons that I believe that I have learned in life and that I wish that I had learned earlier. I know that I cannot go back and change things but a least I can keep them as reminders for myself so that I hopefully can remember not to repeat them, and if they help anyone else that is a bonus.

The other will be a list of words that I think have problematic usage and/or meanings. I have a few that I see as especially having issues. I decided to go ahead and write on this because of an encounter with someone else here who stated that they thought “offended” was problematic when I said that I was sorry that I had offended them. Offend is not one of my problem ones, though I may have to rethink that.

I_Like_Books,

Lessons that I have learned in life and wish I had learned earlier.

1 ) Walk away from people who hurt you.

2 ) Wrong is hurting people unnecessarily; Evil is deliberately hurting people unnecessarily.

3 ) It is much better to be alone than to be in a bad relationship. Never be afraid of walking away (I have done so even when it left me unhoused)

4 ) Always save everything that you want to keep in files that you have multiple backups of, this includes links to anything that you might want to share.

5 ) The first thing that you need to learn about any online space is how to block, keep yourself safe.

6 ) You do not have to set yourself on fire to keep anyone else warm. Take care of yourself.

7 ) Trust your inner impression, if you feel that you are in danger or that a person or organization might hurt you get away as fast as possible.

8 ) Live your own truth, do not let others tell you who you are.

I_Like_Books,

9 ) Just because someone is genetically related to you or has known you for a long time does not give them the right to hurt you or to run your life.

10 ) The book is virtually always better than the movie.

11 ) Always save your search links, not just the bookmarks, Google will reorder things tomorrow and you will not be able to find what you are looking for since someone else will pay them to place their facts higher on the search order - market determines what you find for not actual FACTS

12 ) Always fact check, most of what you hear is lies. This is even more true for things on the internet.

13 ) If you are the only one who is seeing reality everyone else in the crowd is bound to think you are the one with the delusions

14 ) Sadly, far far too many people want to hurt other innocent people in the name of their god

Is anyone interested in giving music lessons in exchange for coding lessons?

I've been at Google/YouTube for ~10 years and I know Javascript/Typescript, Python, Ruby, HTML/CSS and some Linux/UNIX sysops (nginx, supervisord, etc). I've worked on Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS.

Looking for lessons in mixing/mastering, guitar, production, and maybe piano or voice.

Online via video chat, or in person in the SF Bay Area.

Boosts welcome!
