Today is my official "Mastoversary." Now this account I made in November 2022, but my first Mastodon account as made today two years ago on Dot Social.
In these two years, my social media experience has been better. I've had more direct conversations with folks about so many things. Learned about more new music. Kept connected about politics, without as much of the...wild anger, bitterness, and screaming angrily into the void.
7 years on Mastodon, time flies by. At first, as a addition to Twitter. Then I started posting here and cross-copying there, and gradually Twitter lost all interest. I'm delighted that this non-predatory network exists, and that so many of us can fund its development teams and administrators. #Mastoversary

Today's my #mastoversary .I had only lurked on twitter before, so this year I've had several firsts:
Posted some things and people were nice 😀
Interacted with strangers on the internet and it was fine (big step for an introvert!)
Discovered the @vagina_museum and got some great gifts!
First purchase from a small seller @blockforest - brilliantly original xmas cards.
Got inspired by photos to buy a camera and try to capture some birds. This chough is my favourite (so far)
I think I like it here!
If Twitter is a blast-horn, and BlueSky a lecture at a tech conference… #Mastodon is the party that welcomes all, but only the cool kids know where it’s at, even though the welcome signs are everywhere.
Shamelessly will repost some stuff from the past today…and maybe something new. The day falls on bit of existing turmoil, a wild day for wild times.
My year with Mastodon (#MastodonWrapped)
I celebrated my first #Mastoversary a few days ago. It’s been a good first year on Mastodon for me; I like the #Fediverse idea, I like people here, and I like the calm vibe this place offers.
Also, I ditched all of my other #SocialMedia accounts. All but one.¹
As I say, Mastodon is a good #platform to be, however there are a couple of things I’ve been struggling with the whole time. I’m going to put together a brief summary below in hope that someone can help me with them.
¹ I still keep Instagram to exchange cute pics of sloths and pandas, and ice-hockey reels with my sons. 😁

The thing that buggers me the most is boosting.
I know boosting is important because it’s the only way to spread the news around as there are no #algorithms here to force-feed us what they “think” is good for us, and I’m quite a #booster myself, too. But I’ve cut back a bit recently for a simple reason: I can’t hide boosted posts from my #profile.
I mean, when someone views my profile I want them to see my toots first so they can get an idea of who I am and, conversely, when I visit someone else’s profile I prefer to see what they have to say.
If you’re a generous booster but not so creative in the “#ContentCreation” department, just like me, you get a profile full of re-blogged posts where your original #toots are hard to find. And no, #Pinned toots don’t do the trick.
If there’s a #hack to work around this, I would much appreciate if you share it here.

Caveat: These tips work for the web interface. I don't use any apps.
When looking at someone else's profile you can eliminate boosts by clicking on the "Posts and Replies" tab. Still has replies but does leave out boosts.

Joined just prior to John Mastodon founding & naming the platform after himself, and have learned a lot from the always gracious JM
Appreciate how artists sharing their work plus community/mutual aid are welcome here (there are, of course, some turdslaws about it, h/t @genderlessinsults, so we should all keep encouraging both)
I'm finding some of the scaffolding is being built back up here, but there's no reason to pretend, Melon Husk did a deep blow to online information dissemination, which, for me, emphasizes the importance of not being tied to centralized platforms AND maintaining ties IRL and in our own communities.
Today is my 1-year anniversary on Mastodon! Exactly 365 days ago, I decided to tell :spacekaren: to shove it, deleted my profile, and landed here on #CORTEXIMPLANT to grace all y'all with my glorious presence! 🤣🤣🤣
But seriously, this was the first instance I landed on and I have not regretted it for a single minute! I love it here, and am really glad that I landed here first. So I wasn’t really on the bird site before, although I did have an account. I just didn’t really interact there or post very often, if at all really.
And so I heard how a lot of people were leaving it for Mastodon. And I signed up during that huge influx of people last year.
I still have that account from when I first joined and I post to it every now and again but it’s more politics and policy focused. And I saw it leaning that way more and more you know, just a few months after I joined and I guess I decided I wanted an account where I could be a little silly, a little off-the-cuff, maybe a little vulnerable?… and just you know, an account that was like… a little more personal.
And I eventually landed at the Beige Party. And I’m so glad I did! There are some really neat people here… really funny. I love the extra-long character count. And our Admin is…
You know Theropologist, I couldn’t do this without giving a shout out to you. @theropologist is the best. He is so good at taking care of things behind the scenes and I don’t have to worry about haters coming at me, which is something as a trans girl online, you know… more often than not, we have to worry about people being ugly to us. But because of the way I’ve found Mastodon to be and particularly this instance, I rarely think about it.
And that’s something that has made such huge difference compared to other places on the net. Being on this platform has really just been amazing.
It’s been so good for my mental and emotional health. And honestly… I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say, it’s been “life changing”.
I mean, I’ve had conversations with people that have opened my eyes to new ways of looking at things, interactions that have tugged at my heart, made me cry. Heck I’ve had interactions with people that have made me laugh so hard that I started crying.
And just… the whole experience has given me a fresh hope, in a number of different ways, in… in ways that I haven’t felt in a really, really long time.
I mean I’ve… I’ve met people here and because of that, I have texting buddies who periodically check on me. I’ve had lunch and dinner with a few who were at one point just strangers on the internet… you know people who lived in my phone, who turned into friendly people here who I interacted with and then became trusted friends.
I’ve met women here… cis and trans, who have become role models. And I’ve met guys here who are some of those…

really nice guys.
Yeah, imagine that. Guys who are just… nice.
I’ve had video calls with a handful of people here. I have a friend from here who… she, she doesn’t really post here anymore but I regularly call to let her know how I’m doing…
as well as to see how she’s doing.
And believe it or not,
I’ve become really, really close to a handful of very special friends here who’ve become like sisters.
Yeah. In just one year…

I am so, so very thankful I found all of y’all.

My official #Mastoversary was in April. However, yesterday was the anniversary of when I joined the Urusai Instance.
In the year I've been on Urusai, I've went from about 300 to 1000 followers, which is still a third of what I had on Twitter. And yet, I'm finding myself having more likes, boosts, and real, genuine interactions now than I had over on the social media platform formally known as Twitter.
I don't miss it. I miss some of the people there, but not the platform.
I'm glad I made the switch to #Mastodon. And I'm glad for all the new folks I met here.
I don't know any of you in person but I'm so grateful knowing that you're all here ready with advice and laughs and support.
You've introduced me to new books, new TV shows, and new ways of thinking. I don't think I could do this without you and even if I could, I sure as hell wouldn't want to.
Tomorrow is my one-year #Mastoversary! One year since I left Elon's hate-fest. (I haven't entirely left it but I don't post over there very often anymore).
