A little-known multi-agency drug war group runs thousands of #facialrecognition scans and other #surveillance operations. We found over 37,000 requests for support, connecting at least 233 #lawenforcement organizations in #Minnesota and beyond.
"Those who have never seen Superior get an inadequate, even inaccurate idea, by hearing it spoken of as a 'lake,' and to those who have sailed over its vast extent the word sounds positively ludicrous. Though its waters are fresh and crystal, Superior is a sea. It breeds storms, and rain and fogs, like the sea. It is cold in mid-summer as the Atlantic. It is wild, masterful, and dreaded as the Black Sea." - Rev. George Grant, Ocean to Ocean, 1872
Rep. Dean Phillips of #Minnesota has decided to challenge President Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination and will launch his #2024election campaign on Friday in New Hampshire, where he will file to appear on the state's primary ballot.
#Minnesota is SO close to getting a good state flag (design F1953 obviously), so... as a Minnesotan I definitely expect a major disappointment at the 11th hour tomorrow when the commission inevitably chooses the worst possible corporate-y flag design instead 😭
I just noticed a new McMansion being built on the hill behind Grand Marais. It's the beginning of the end of the illusion that Grand Marais was surrounded by untouched wilderness. Where there's one new McMansion, there will be more, like a blight upon the landscape.
One thing that Twitter was really good at was selling calendars. Mastodon and Threads for whatever reason just don't move the calendars in the same way.
Here's my 2024 calendar of landscape shots from northern Minnesota.
The wildfire smoke was making the color of sunrise all weird this morning, and I really wanted this foreground to work with the boats but it feels all unbalanced. I should have shot just the boats and Coast Guard building. You can't win them all.
This is a vertical shot, and in theory, they fixed Mastodon to show images fully. I'm unsure if that is for all users or just new users. If you can't see a vertical image, you'll need to click it and then change your settings.
We spotted a bird yesterday, but not able to identify it with 100% confidence. Is this an osprey? We've never seen an osprey on our #Minnesota lake before. Photographed from a distance unfortunately.
The State Emblem Redesign Commission is set to reconvene next month to choose a new state flag and seal. The panel found six flag and five seal designs Tuesday that will move on.
There's a mountain lion in our northern Minnesota neighborhood. A neighbor saw it the other day while he was mowing. If there's one animal that I'd rather not have in the neighborhood, it's a mountain lion.
It's hard to believe but the Minnesota Flag Redesign Commission screwed up the choice. They had a great design with the tricolor flag, and it's now lame.
Reminder that battery buses have been a nightmare literally everywhere they were used. But especially in colder regions where range really drops off.
It's pretty obvious that all transit agencies will either go back to diesel, or adopt something like hydrogen buses. Physics doesn't change no matter how much someone on Twitter claims otherwise.
The Nobles of Iowa moved to blue Minnesota. The Huckinses of Oregon moved to red Missouri. Their separate journeys, five weeks apart, illustrate the fracturing of America.
The mysterious cubes are part of the noon meal. They were fermented lentil broth for three days so they have tangy flavors of hard cheese. This is our first home made Burmese style tofu. We will make this again. Thanks to San Francisco and Singapore for ideas about lentil tofu. #fermentation, #minnesota, #burmesetofu, #vegetarian.
I love the unusual texture of the ice here and am disheartented by the fact that folks feel the need to publicly fly their political flag, even while ice fishing.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all go out on the ice together and just get along.
Now that Minnesota's new flag has been finalized for a while, what are your thoughts?

The design has a number of variations, and the panel will meet again [Tuesday, December 19] to settle the final details.
