I don't think I've ever compiled the kernel as often on a single day as I have today, but my Mobian port to the Pixel 3a / 3a XL is making progress.

My device-specific kerrnel repo is working, though I still need to find the right place for some kernel config stuff. if compiled as is, touch won't work. But I can manually copy the ".config" from pmOS to the repo and do "make olddefconfig" and then everything works nicely.

A significant contribution towards the vision of the Next Generation Internet initiative also qualifies. What is good for the whole open internet also benefits Europe, after all. #App developers, is there an easy way to securely share sensitive data (eg. login credentials) locally between two #apps on the same device? And if not, what about non-sensitive data (like how the #SimpleApps or whatever they're called now share themes)? 🔏

Basically it's a family of apps with a common login and we're trying to avoid the user having to log in separately on each one. We're using #Capacitor, if that matters ⚙️

(If all this was on #Mobian it'd be so simple 😑)

@badrihippo encrypted local database file

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@mykhaylo hmm, so two questions:

  1. What key would I use for encryption? (Will it have to be provided by the app builds, since I'm guessing every sister app would need to share the same decryption key?)

  2. What's the way to share the database file between apps, given that Android isolates apps so much? (Is it using the Files permission and then literally opening the file like a normal desktop program...or is there some other magic I'm not aware of?)

My experience with so far on the compared to Byzantium:

  • Most applications run much faster
  • The repository is obviously much more up to date
  • The modem wakes up much slower for incoming phone calls while in suspend. Some of the phone calls were not shown in the UI at all.
  • The micro SD Card reader has similar issues with suspend as with PureOS. Sometimes after supend the card can not be read anymore.

But right now I really love @mobian it is impressively snappy ❤️

If I understand this correctly, this should not affect me. I was using the weekly build which is based on Debian trixie. I can't find which kernel it is exactly uname just says 6.6-librem5

Ok seems like I just fucked up (my fault) Pure OS on my which was pre installed on the phone. So I will install a fresh distribution. What is your opinion: Should I use again because it (maybe) works best or should I try ? Has anyone tested them recently?

tomasoqvist,

@zwarf I ran Mobian on L5 as my daily driver for a while, and generally it worked well. When the modem crashed, I think it always showed by that the indicator icon was gone. Toggling the hardware kill switch usually fixed it.

I am a bit of a phone and distro hopper though, so starting this past Saturday I am using postmarketOS edge with Gnome-mobile on a OnePlus 6 that I have as a daily driver. It has its quirks, but I will continue using it for a while and see how it goes 🙂.

@zwarf@social.anoxinon.de avatar

@tomasoqvist Sounds awesome thanks a lot! Then I will try mobian next :)

Questions for linux phone enthusiasts:

  1. What's to stop Instagram etc creating apps for mobile linux? (In principle I mean, obviously there's no market yet)
  2. Is it possible to set up phones with users, so (in principle) you could have a child as a user who can't install anything without the root password?

Thanks ahead of time (this is for my forthcoming blog post on the benefits of linux mobile for young people)

shalien,
@shalien@projetretro.io avatar

@davidoclubb little to no market and web browser exists on all platforms.

Having a limited account can indeed prevent app installation but not running apps directly via the command line if they get the executable.

You can setup profile on some distro with allowed apps list etc.

@BeanieBarrow Nice post! For Firefox i can recommend you to give @user0 's fenix branch of https://codeberg.org/user0/mobile-config-firefox/src/branch/fenix a try. It works really well in landscape, I use it on my PinePhone Pro with keyboard case, too (see https://linmob.net/using-the-pinephone-pro-daily-despite-having-given-up-on-it/ for my post on it - I still use it daily.)

Do you know a lot about networking on Linux and want to help fix a multi-homed DNS routing issue experienced by all #linuxmobile distros?

https://gitlab.com/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/issues/1430

Solving this directly benefits users of #postmarketos, #mobian, and others!

ptesarik,
@ptesarik@fosstodon.org avatar

@craftyguy @erikk To make it clear I'm trying to be constructive here. If the answer to my question is: “Yes,” then you want to run your MMS application in its own network namespace which has the IPv6 route. The system-wide namespace does not have it.

@craftyguy@freeradical.zone avatar

@ptesarik @erikk yeah sorry, thank you for the help, it's really appreciated! I've been thinking about your comment, and saw you also posted on the issue. I'd like to do some homework to make sure I understand your point before I respond 😁

on the ? Yes! In a moment of frustration, I flashed and installed the version of Lomiri in the Debian 12 repo. It was buggy as hell and crashed after 2 minutes. I suspect this was due to the GTK app I tried to run. After it crashed the first time, it wouldn't boot again and I had to flash Mobian all over to record this video.....

Mobian with Lomiri booting on the Librem 5 and then crashing about two minutes later.

Damn, #PostmarketOS doesn't aim to include #Flatpak as a default app source?

Welp, there goes the idea of (paid) indie games for that mobile platform. 😐 Given #Flathub works on a payment backend it would've been best for #LinuxPhone's as a whole to go that route instead of doing their own sandboxing around apk. #MobileLinux devices will never get out of the niche they're in that way even if the GUI is ever so fancy.

Couldn't find hard info regarding #mobian or #ubports about this. 😐

@DrRac27 "The most important thing about Linux mobile for me is the anticapitalist mentality" I get that, and 10-15 years younger me agrees. But sadly, this is not utopia, and money has not been abandonned despite being an illusion. I've seen to much FOSS burnout to find a fight against using money as a sign of appreciation for people that mostly get more or (often) less friendly bug reports that just add to to do lists reasonable.
(Sorry for being a sell-out ;-) )
@Natanox

DrRac27,
@DrRac27@fosstodon.org avatar

@linmob @Natanox but does money really stop burnouts? In paid jobs people are burned out all the time and being dependend on the money is just another factor that contributes to overworking? Of course doing both paid and unpaid work at the same is the biggest risk which is probably why so many are burning out? I know the same from other activism (organizing demos/actions) where burnouts are a topic too. But they all seem to be students or paid workers, could that be the problem?
