I missed #MusicWomenWednesday yesterday, but today I'm listening to this amazing album by Fleur (this is her debut, her second one from last year is great too).
Fleur is based in the Netherlands and all this stuff is in French, but WOW is it catchy. And her VOICE. 🤯 I should say that I don't always like stuff that's this.. light and airy? I don't even know what genre this is. Kinda pop, kinda avant? Kinda old-ish sounding but still super fresh. Some of it is pretty upbeat but it's jangly, like a ton of music I like (Smithereens haha), so maybe it's that.
But seriously, if you want some amazing jangly pop (in French) with a GREAT female singer, Fleur is IT:
Given my penchant for women who owe a lot of their musical stylings to Stevie Nicks, you'd think I would be a bigger Fleetwood Mac fan. (not really my jam)
For this week's #MusicWomenWednesday, check out this amazing sounding album 'Melt the Honey' that comes out Friday. The band is PACKS, aka Madeline Link.
These songs have such a cool, lo-fi feel- they reminds me of early Beck songs or maybe quieter Sonic Youth or Sebadoh songs, with Link's cool, unaffected voice and some great lyrics. It's folky and catchy as hell.
'Melt the Honey' comes out Jan 19 (Friday) and it's definitely a contender for my top favorites of this year. Listen/grab it here:
Got a killer #MusicWomenWednesday for this week. When I was a kid in the 90s, I had this awesome Wax Trax video compilation (on VHS!) from 1994, it had KMFDM, Coil and Laibach on it (and a ton of other great bands) including BRAINDEAD SOUNDMACHINE.
This was the first way I ever heard this great Patsy Cline song, this unforgettable 'metaldisco' (as they liked their genre to be called) cover. It's totally wild and probably underappreciated.
For #MusicWomenWednesday I would like to submit Jeremy by the band Muncie Girls which is from the album Fixed Ideals. The whole album is great. YouTube link below
I mentioned Plastics briefly a week ago on a post with a couple other female-fronted bands, but I figured since it's #MusicWomenWednesday, they deserve a dedicated shout out.
This is punk rock how it should be done. A SOLID album that sounds amazing- I've listened to it a lot this year. Plastics are from Brighton and they put out 'Plastic World' three years ago. Just 6 tracks, fast-paced, fierce and ferocious.
For @loewe#MusicWomenWednesday , we venture into dark wave territory, usually well populated by female musicians.
This is by Hungry Lucy, from their album "Glo", who has more than 20 years on its shoulders. But it's still a good example of soft, romantic dark wave.
Heard #MusicWomenWednesday is a thing now, and the first band that came to mind for me is Ladytron. I've loved them since I first heard their first album '604' when it came out in 2001. 'Playgirl' is so catchy and infectious, it INSTANTLY hooked me. And their cool voices!
Ladytron has had so many amazing songs since, too, like 'Seventeen', and 'Deadzone' (a warning for this one, I didn't link the video here, it is VERY strange and dark, just search for it if you wanna see, kinda like how their video for another of their newer songs 'The Island' is also weird, they've gone a wild direction lately that I dig, but I'm sure it's not for everyone).
These two of their videos are rad and totally TAME, though - and worth a watch, because they are GREAT:
Some of my favorite Alison Krauss songs, listed below. 💜
"On November 21, 2019, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts. She was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in September 2021"
For #MusicWomenWednesday , a great tune from Lacuna Coil, taken from that incredible masterpiece of dark melodies that is "Comalies" (for me, their unsurpassed peak).
For this #MusicWomenWednesday , I'll jump on the Chelsea Wolfe train. Yes, the dark queen unleashed a new album, that it's really impossible to ignore.
An interesting one for #MusicWomenWednesday - sometimes as I'm watching TV, I use Shazam to take note of a song so I can find it later.
Isobel Waller-Bridge is a modern classical composer for TV and movies, and her cool song "Bloom" was in whatever I was watching. That led me to her whole 2015 EP, 'Music for Strings'.
I'm not a fan of your older regular classical type stuff. But THIS? THIS is damn good.
