The events that have happened here today marks a new era for the internet. Websites that derive their value from user-submitted content are continuing their move towards sealing off that content and information from the world. Their libraries were created by everyone, but will soon be available to only those who pay.
Ok.
I could still by a new rack.
The question is, when does support run out? Seems to be a 2019 model.
Also: what kind of RAID fo you use?
Are you using HDD or SSDs (faster but shorter-lived, IMO. Flash-chip technology only guarantee about 1m accesses, not all that much.) @grumpasaurus@n4
Thinking I want to build my first personal home server. I have a #Synology#NAS DS220j but I'm thinking it's probably not adequate for Plex transcoding, among other tasks. I have a spare #Ryzen 2700x and 16GB DDR4, and also a 2060 Super (does a server benefit from a GPU?). Looking for any advice #fosstodon would be willing to share regarding hardware and software solutions.
Moving from openmediavault (#omv) to plain #armbian with #nfs file sharing and a simple #rdiff backup cron job on my underpowered #helios4#nas has dramatically reduced power consumption and overall stability. Highly recommended!
I haven't really ventured out on to the internet in search of technical help lately (and yes, I'm running my browser without AdBlock, since that's how most people browse) and my god, has it really gotten that bad? With the SEO and the constant ads? 😭
If you upload your photos to Google's cloud, and do so as your sole means of backup, you shouldn't...and this is why. There WILL come a day where Google (or any cloud provider) will close their cloud, and your images will go with it.
Consider self-hosting at home or on a VPS with @nextcloud or something similar.

Absolutely agree... And for users with less IT background, buying a good #NAS like #synology offers, might be a good solution to start. They provide photo backup tools and the more high-spec models even allow you to run #docker so you're not locked to their software. You should however keep backups in the cloud or with a friend (and Synology has a nice tool for this as well).
Wow, hosting your own #fediverse instance fills up disk space fast! Almost 50GB since yesterday! Good thing I have like 32TB of raw storage in my array. :D
#WuTang were awesome. Everyone there except for Method Man. Awesome until #Nas took over stage. If you ever get the chance to see him live - take it. Don't ask, don't hesitate, just take the chance. Nas displayed skills that night, vibe, sound, crowd control. Far out and then a bit. He easily bashed a clan of 8 outstanding MCs that night. #NYStateOfMind
I've got somewhat distracted today from my original plans, though have started on a new blog post that should go live hopefully in the next few days, and am currently working on the next steps for my new home NAS.
Currently waiting for TrueNAS Core to get written to my USB Stick and away we will go!
This morning I was graced with the following message on Google Workspace. Given that for the past year and a half I have been paying for an unlimited in storage plan, I was a little surprised.
As far as I know, nothing was sent to me that this change would happen. But now the equivalent plan on Workspace now has the added words that it is limited to 2TB.
For the past year plus now I have been building my workflow around this premise. I think it is an understatement to say I am upset. Upset enough that I am now going to migrate all of my storage off of Google, at least as much as I can. Considering I worked very hard for the past year to move all my photos from my gmail account to my workspace account, I feel a little disenchanted.
So then I went down the route of "how can I fix this with money". Would you believe there is literally no option via google for this? Want unlimited*? Sure, buy the Enterprise plan, have a minimum of 5 users (all paid for) and then request to increase your base storage to the size you need. Oh, and you can only request this every 90 days, no sooner. Oh, and you can be denied. Their love is coming with so many conditions.
I went from panic, to anxiety, to solve it any way I can, and finally to think it through. Even if I fixed this now, when is my next surprise coming.
I just purchased a new Synology with enough storage to accept my full archive on google drive. There are plenty of open source solutions to replicate all the things I use google for. I will miss my cloud backups. But I will not miss this experience.
Creating NAS for dad to replace WD MyCloud, mostly media storage for playback on TV.
Did one for myself, thought I knew what I was doing. For myself I just set it to default SHR hybrid RAID.
Set up dad's with 1 drive and thought could add second for more storage, turns out no, more drives adds redundancy, which isn't what I wanted for this. So deleting storage pool and starting again with JBOD instead.
I take this as a learning experience. #tech#NAS#networking
#wft When asking for the return shipping label, the merchant seriously tried to convince me that I can not return "storage media" if I've broken the seal.
I know that rule exists for music and movies to prevent copying, but it sure as hell does not apply to empty HDDs.
So after I read their T&Cs to them, they finally accepted my return and gave me a shipping label
Well that's it, I've bought a fanless x86 mini PC, I'll install Proxmox on it and run my stuff that way. The Rpi4 is powerful enough for almost everything I need but it's very brittle and sensitive. I've never had luck with using a SSD with it for some reason (probably overheating USB controller), and the form factor with its flimsy power cable is anything but robust. I need more stability in my life ;)
@stooovie good call! Migrated away from my armada of #raspberrypis last year (to an old zotac, which runs only #homeassistant, a dedicated #nas and a beefy optiplex for #plex et al.) and have never looked back. I guess running constantly at the limits of performance is not good for any system. #proxmox is nice but centralisation of everything on one machine, even in containers and virtual machines, has not worked well for me. I hope you have better luck!
