Chicago Police giving out police swag and collecting names at the anti-homeless people Uptown Church Chicago church festival in 2021.

Recently in 2024 this church opposed the rezoning for a homeless shelter, leading to a zoning denial that prevented the shelter from opening and housing unhoused people.

🧵/1 It strikes me that is an extraordinarily successful word in activism, so successful that popular culture is pushing us away from using it because it "offends" the very people it perfectly, irrefutably identifies who are irrefutably responsible for the crisis it creates

Climate movement doesn't really have a powerful word like for the folks steadily making it all worse but clearly there's a need. Think of all these twits wrestling for the mic to trash a while NEVER having offered a solution & NEVER being held accountable for it

Cool story about high-rise apartment buildings being built in Vancouver on land owned by the Squamish First Nation — a project spearheaded by the Squamish Nation itself.

"Predictably, not everyone has been happy about it." And that's partly because some people have an attitude that "can cast Indigenous people in the role of glorified park rangers."

"San Diego is short around 90,000 homes…. We're not going to overcome this deficit anytime soon just building single-family housing."

I see comments from residents pushing back on multi-family housing and ADUs, and it frustrates me a great deal. “Preserving neighborhood character” is a lost cause. San Diego as we’ve known it is gone—the question now is what will replace it? I don’t see a desirable alternative to massive multi-family housing and public transit.

@nitpicking@mstdn.party avatar

@mitchw This is the result of American tax policy, believe it or not, combined with a national real estate bubble. The tax break for homeowners combined with undertaxed inheritance means that many families put most or all of their generational wealth into a house. That means they cannot allow housing prices ("value") in their neighborhood to drop--that would be as if someone just took 15% or something out of your 401(k). Thus NIMBY and BANANA.

Whelp, just got in another day-long argument on ye old Facebook about the housing crisis and probably lost a few IRL friends over it. NIMBYies want to save a 250 yr old farmhouse in MA (housing crisis) that belonged to a civil war general & want to block a 140 units of housing that includes affordable housing.

Me: if you want to commemorate a Union general build a statue. Not save the farm house he got his diapers changed in.

Them: but HISTORY! In Massachusetts!

"To get America building, we need to understand what actually gets in the way of most projects. It isn't bureaucrats in Washington, or counties with strict height limits on buildings, or environmental activists chaining themselves to pipelines. It's pissed-off locals, who don't want stuff — any stuff — built in their backyards."

Carlos Moreno, a Franco-Colombian urbanist, has been helping spread the idea of 15-minute cities — where people can access key things in their life within a short walk, bike ride or transit ride of their home. But the climate solution is seeing huge challenges, including conspiracy theories and resistance from the global Right.

Just started reading the 568! page Electric Sector Modernization Plan. The highlight so far is the enormous increase in capacity required to switch from gas to heat pumps for winter heating.

This is going to be a massive and contentious issue, particularly with the movement.

The main thing that makes me curious about alternate economic systems is facts like a top 5% salary in the UK being £80k/year. Statistically that makes you 'rich', but it just.... doesn't. Rich is Lamborghinis and yachts, £80k pre-tax is maybe being able to afford a house in whichever major city you have to live for work and having a rainy day fund. I hate that we all just accept that having even moderate financial stability is to have made it, when in reality homeownership and not retiring below the poverty line should be the literal bare minimum that everyone deserves.

davidbootster,
@davidbootster@mastodon.social avatar

@malwaretech same here in . ‘Richness’ is quite fragile, and if you don’t have a top 5% or double income, live is quite hard. And if anything threatens that income, you fall down quite ‘a bit’.
Needless to say that the real rich, as in yachts and Lamborghini’s, are not part of that top 5% income 😉.
It’s beyond me why we put up with all this for so long. My take is that people are quite limited in their worldview and perception of others, the ’s.
