Pre-holiday recording/plugin/gear sales were a big deal for me a few years ago. Maybe I’m past my gear-head days because nothing appeals to me this year in the sales ads.
Did I miss something good? And yes, I’m really curious to know.

@muz4now I think gear snobbery and gear paralysis is simply a symptom of insecurity when it comes to writing and recording.
Use what you have with the time you have to create what you can with the knowledge you have.
enjoy the process, not the gear

I wonder what is doing different to in terms of their builds. I noticed that some run just fine in Ardour while Bitwig Studio reports problems with reading metadata or glibc version conflicts. 🙄️

How many do you have installed on your system? 🫣️ I always remove the ones I do not use and currently sport the following numbers: : 36 / : 22 / : 92 / : 104
If I subtract different variants of the same plug-in, I get 92 individual plug-ins. Feels like a lot to me! 😝️

@gozes I can only really say something about () in combination with and WirePlumber. And this works beautifully. I am super happy. are scarce if you're going native, but there's a good enough selection for my needs, see https://amadeuspaulussen.com/blog/2022/favorite-music-production-software-on-linux. Having said that, there are occasional glitches with how some plugins behave, maybe to the extent that it was on 5 years ago or so. on is amazing to me though. 🥳

The are starting to shape up like a library of simple yet tools with beautifully crafted user interfaces. 🤓️
Today I became aware of 4 (!) new plugins: WSTD CRSHR, WSTD FLDR, WSTD SMTHR and WSTD MANGLR.
Check them out at https://wasted.audio/software or have a look at the source code at https://github.com/Wasted-Audio.
PD: As usual, there are also Windows and MacOS builds.

Would you prefer #plugins for #musicproduction on #linux to be distributed as #flatpak? Actually, I would.
Would also be easier to keep them up-to-date. And, no more files and folders scattered all over my home folder. 😅️ #linuxaudio #packagemanager #updates #dotfiles

@x42 @ercanbrack 2/5 I find a future in which the system (e.g. pacman) would only have to manage packages for the and all (and ?) would be managed via , simply put, intriguing. 😇️
On my computers, I already maintain all third party applications via Flatpak, while pacman takes care of the OS.

@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@x42 @ercanbrack 4/5 Since I help #vendors with #debugging their #plugins for #linux I found the idea appealing that they could simply offer their plugins via #flatpak with less worries.
Because what they don't want (and what often even keeps them from supporting Linux) are OS-specific problems (e.g. runs on #ubuntu, not on #arch etc.). They are usually downright afraid of #fragmentation and the associated support effort. 🤯️

For anyone unaware, Google Chrome is currently rolling out an update that track your interests based on browsing history, then share them with 3rd party websites. The notification page makes it sound like they added a new privacy feature, but in actuality they automatically enrolled you into their tracking system and you have to go and manually opt out.

I’ve been reading more on moving to Fedora Silverblue. I believe that I have the basics worked out:

  • I will try to install absolutely nothing through rpm-ostree onto my main OS. This will keep upgrades trouble free.

  • I will use Flatpak for as many apps as I can, & also run my virtualization & compatibility layers through Gnome Boxes & Bottles (WINE).

  • I will run my DAWs/plugins, & non-Flatpak apps inToolbox containers.
