Witnessing another occurrrence of the anti-pattern this morning inspired me to write some thoughts about this social behavior that is so common on our that is based on mechanics.

On the forum I created a category for (or ) patterns, and the "Reply Guy" is the first entry in what might be turned into a pattern library collection.

I also notified @danhon regarding the cards website:

Based on those cards, and the patterns they represent, we might think of better ways to support more behavior in Fediverse apps.

Talking pro-social, have a look at this fascinating site that collects patterns of behavior along exactly these lines of thought:

1️⃣ Use of a preferred platform & preferred technology makes it more likely students are more receptive to lessons learned.

2️⃣ Interactive nature supports experiential, contextual, and discovery learning.

3️⃣ Especially effective if you are going beyond knowledge transfer and seeking to persuade.

🎮 Our nonprofit has been producing prosocial video games since 2008.

⭐ New game design challenge about the importance of social connectedness. Pitches due March 17th.

😞 You have misunderstood.

I have not said that quotes are, per se, bad.

⭐ What I have said is that some people absolutely do not want them. And I said I think we should request for their consent before forcing them to use them.

🎓 Don't believe everything you read.

🎮 On a related topic: later this month the NGO I work with is publishing the first of a series of free video games that teach and encourage the use of critical thinking.

Here is an interesting piece about some possible impacts that AI might have on online communities.

Shown here is one that I feel has been a problem for many years:

"... everything new posted online is created by a machine or by someone looking to turn a profit."

Although I do occasionally find other voices online, big social media has been very effective in silencing too many of them. Their algorithms-tuned-for-profit and use of dark patterns has made it increasingly difficult to hear the helpful voices over the ugliness and nonsense.

And we've allowed them to improperly use Section 230 as a shield to protect them from responsibility for the harms they have knowingly created.

Here’s a thought experiment: If you had a small group of skilled mobile, desktop, server, and web front-end engineers who have access to time and money, and are eager to MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE USING THEIR SKILLS (and not just spin up yet another exploitive startup) what would YOU have them do?

Be specific.

Assume cost is no object.

It’s time to stop bellyaching about how bad tech is, and start brainstorming about what good it can do.

Please repost for exposure.

EDIT: Let’s add hardware, industrial design, and UX engineers in the mix as well, to round things out.

The Internet is allowing us to build a richer, more complex society but the way in which we Internet today is failing to support the governance systems that a more complex world requires.

I take a look at why these issues are related, try to develop an intuition for a way forward, and point at the emerging field that is coming together to build that future.
