Thin-veiled #racism under the guise of "urban renewal" destroyed a once-vibrant #Black community and economic center... then-called "Black Bottom" (named by early French colonial settlers for the dark, fertile topsoil found in the area).
The City of #Detroit had published a very insightful video on the history of Black Bottom, which I would highly recommend to be watched in its entirety... but its destruction starts here: https://youtu.be/iSVgOCiT93Y?t=1044
What about today? Aren't they even more influenced by what is on their social media? This is precisely why diverse voices freely expressing their concerns in the Fediverse is critical and why remaining on Twitter is so vile.
We need more people expressing their fears, and outrage, discussing discrimination and racism. Not less.
It blows my mind sometimes: this insane burden of proof some Republicans have with racism.
Until the cross is on the lawn and the lighter fluid is out, they just can't SEE #racism. Racism just CAN'T be the reason. The person just CAN'T be racist - some other reason MUST exist for their actions.
Mental gymnastics follow. Nuance. Pleas for "context".
Meanwhile every POC sees it plain as day.
It took a text message to show Tucker Carlson was racist? REALLY?
To coincide with her new book More than a Glitch, we’re looking forward to hosting Meredith Broussard for a talk on “Confronting Race, Gender and Ability Bias in Tech” on 10th May 2023.
It is embedded in our everyday lives and lurks within everyday practices and cultural behaviour patterns. It is not just about overt hostility by extremists.
It sustains white supremacy and is often unnoticed by well-intentioned individuals.
The concept of people learning to think critically is anathema to all despots.
And without education, we don't have a prepared society. Without a prepared society, we have no economy, period.
It doesn't take much to understand that.
Point is, Republicans need to stop harassing our educators. But will they get the memo for about the umpteenth time? Add this to the GOP driving the economy off a cliff, again.
@TonyStark It's hardly surprising, that only the United States ever had anti-literacy laws — as expected passed by the racist slaveholder states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, and Virginia, between 1740 and 1834, targeting black people.
That's not too unlikely, what today's Confedereds (like DeSantis, Abbott & their accomplices) are trying to hide from the nation.
You know if a Black or POC tells you they've experienced racism here and your response is repeatedly anything like-
"I've never seen any racism here, how can it be happening to this extent if I've never seen it?"
You 👏🏽 Are 👏🏽 Part 👏🏽Of 👏🏽The👏🏽Problem 👏🏽
Mfz don't owe you a powerpoint presentation of their traumas and disrespect for you to scrutinize and determine "yup, that was definitely racist." BFF.
There's a difference between autonomous spaces and segregation.
Autonomous spaces are developed by OUR choice, by US saying you [those who embody hegemonic identities] aren't allowed in OUR space because it's just for US. These spaces help us empower ourselves and exist in defiance of systems or oppression.
Segregated spaces are imposed on us by YOU. Segregated spaces are YOU [those who embody hegemonic identities] saying that we people who are systemically oppressed are not welcome in your space. Because these spaces belong to YOU, they rely on and even reify systems of oppression. Sure, you might wrap it up in some concern trolling bullshit about "being more comfortable in your own space", but we see what's really happening.
Please stop calling for segregation and start working to make all spaces accessible and welcoming.
📚 Recently finished the audiobook, "Becoming," by Michelle Obama. (Thanks to Libby/library.) Then with that added perspective, re-listened to "A Promised Land," by Barack Obama. Folks, wow. Must say a personal opinion: if you want to have your finger effectively on the pulse of USA issues, these two books, preferably close together, are very nearly a must. Don't cheat yourself out of the perspective. Not enough spaces for all tags I'd like to add. #USPol#racism#Obama#books#bookstodon
Once again a white person who I challenged about their (not so) subtle racism has blocked me in the middle of a conversation.
@JohnLoader6 entered a thread about moderating instances so that the #Fediverse does not become segregated to say that he can't tell if people are white or Black without a profile pic.
Me: but Blind people can tell who's white or Black, what's stopping you from paying more attention?
Him: I have worked with Blind people for years, and I don't know how they do that, explain.
Me: OK, but I'll insult you too. I explain, and call him a loser asshole
Him: blocks me
I still want to know why he found it salient to mention that his tech advisor is mixed race.
Anyway, white people: if you do this? You're fucking racist. Even if you think you're a liberal. ESPECIALLY if you think you're a liberal.
Republicans attack on democracy includes everything on this list plus racism, misogyny and anything they can conjure up to divide the US for their benefactors, the plutocracy.
In all appearances, Republicans are the water boys setting up Fascism for their benefactors, the oligarchs and corporations.
These doesn't really matter. If you wanna fight against #racism, fight against #racism. Not just against white supremecy. There are also people who believes in Black Supremecy!
If we want a peaceful and friendly environment we have to remove #racism altogether. This is not something impossible. There are many examples where people of different religions are living together peacefully without any conflict for years. Take a look at Morocco !
Public confidence in the #police X this country is pretty low. Expectations lower. A cop can kick a boy, (18? who weighs 90 pounds, who is on his belly) in the head "like a soccer ball" with both police & civilian witnesses, but it does not meet the level of excessive use of force, & therefore #prosecution ?? NO #racism & no justice here... I mostly don't go for carceral solutions but somehow it doesn't apply to the police!
