It occurs to me that was held in such esteem that not only were all living first ladies in attendance at her funeral (as she requested), so were two presidents, also Gov. Kemp, and both Georgia senators.

It will be awhile before her legacy is matched.

"As I watched [Melania Trump] sitting stone-still in the front row with the other First Ladies [at Rosalynn Carter's funeral], listening to Carter's lifelong accomplishments and selfless works of charity, I wondered if she was imagining what people would say about her achievements at her funeral."

Rosalynn Carter's roots as an activist, advocate and independent woman go back to her teens, when her father died and she, as the oldest of four kids, took on caring and breadwinning responsibilities. Smithsonian Magazine looks at her lifetime of service, and her influence. “The president of the United States cares what I think. I find myself in the eye of history. I have influence. And know it,” she told the New York Times in 1979.

“It’s hard to live until you’re 95 years old. I think the best explanation for that is to marry the best spouse: someone who will take care of you and engage and do things to challenge you and keep you alive and interested in life.”

Today we mourn the loss of and thank her for the gifts she gave us, including the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers. She said, "there are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers; those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers."
