Today is St. George's Day and I'm frankly ashamed to be English, and I'm ashamed of what our country had become under the cruel leadership of the Tories.
In addition to being ashamed, I'm also pretty angry. I hope the Tories are obliterated at the next election. Every single Tory MP who has voted for this legislation, and has pretended that there are safe and legal routes to claim asylum in the UK, deserves to burn in the fires of hell for all eternity, as far as I'm concerned.
The Rwanda plan in on (at great cost financially, and in humane terms) with the Home Office targeting around 350 asylum seekers they think have the least ability to launch successful claims against deportation to Rwanda.
Given that each of the first 300 migrants targeted by the Home Office will have cost around £1.8m to remove from the UK, you cannot but wonder how much better that money would have been spent integrating them into society!
Whatever our backgrounds, family circumstances, or who we vote for, most of us want to live in a society where everyone is cared for & treated with respect.
"The Rwanda plan was not in the Tory manifesto.. It risks being contrary to UK law.. It risks breaching international law, not found by a foreign court but the highest court in the UK.. It risks breaching human rights that are baked into the hard won Good Friday Agreement.. And all this in what may be the last days of the Tory government"
In the U.K., the House of Lords has voted by a large majority to stop the U.K. government's Rwanda Bill. The bill, which threatened to deport asylum seekers from the U.K. to Rwanda, will now not pass into legislation during the current parliamentary session.
Those hoping the #HouseofLords (and Labour peers specifically) might continue to obstruct the #RwandaBill, look like they may well be disappointed as Labour peers kook ready to respect the 'will of the commons' in the final stages of the bill's progress (although they may offer some braking criticisms).
Labour, it seems is frightened of a post-electoral revenge by (younger) #Tory peers, forcing elderly Labour peers into late night sittings to defend new legislation.
I've just realised that it's because the government's #rwandabill will never be enacted that this is the one #Tory policy that #Labour has committed to reverse 😳 🤦♂️
"In its report on the UK-Rwanda treaty on an asylum partnership, the House of Lords Committee concludes that the arrangements it provides for are incomplete and accordingly the treaty is not ready for ratification. The Committee highlights that the Government has provided no indication of the timeframe for the completion of these steps, but the evidence suggests it will clearly take some time."
I see Vic Derbyshire gave Mogg a kicking on Newsnight last night about Rwanda 🤣 🤣
Briefly:
VD: Why'd you vote for something you said wouldn't work?
JM: Because it will work better than what there was before
Narrator - which wasn't working
VD: But will it stop the boats (x 4)?
JM: Not before the election
FFS - why waste two days of Parliamentary time on it then? (rhetorical question)
As Dave Penman (the FDA, the civill servants trade union) points out, the #RwandaBill (on its way to the Lords) includes aspects that conflict with #international law.
The #Tories are 'essentially advising civil servants to act illegally, which will put them in conflict between their obligation to uphold the rule of law & to follow their instructions from elected ministers'.
I actually had to look up who the Home Secretary was just now, because I couldn't remember which one of the dark world muppets was "running" the department this week 🙄
Aaanyway ... they've outsourced the "breaking the law" bit of the ECHR problem to civil servants. Let's hope the poor bastards go out on strike.
GPLB: "Home Office says it will scrap guidance saying officials must always obey ECHR injunctions if Rwanda bill passed"
Call Me Dave's being questioned on Rwanda in Davos.
Q: Is what’s happening over the Rwanda bill an embarrassment for the UK on the world stage?
DC: "Quite the contrary ... the government’s approach is 'quite unorthodox in some ways.'" 🤨
Q: "Are you worried the [Rwanda] deal could collapse?"
DC: [I am] is confident the Rwanda bill will be passed tonight, when it has its third reading in the House of Commons.

Former Tory attorney general expresses concern Rwanda bill would let UK decide for itself if it's breaking international law.
“only two days ago the government was justifying the air strikes against the Houthis on the grounds that their attacks on shipping were against international law … the UK would not want to leave it up to the Houthis to decide whether or not they were complying with international law.”
Racists arguing amongst themselves, most of the country could not give a fuck over what they are fighting about.
We're freezing our tits off over high energy bills, but these wankers have their heating bills paid for by us! 😡
