The Smart 4K TV I have now is totally frustrated but fully functioning, so I'm not in the market for this gen. Every so often it takes over the screen and complains it has no network connectivity and that I'm losing out! I then massage the buttons on its remote, calming its fears until it returns to its slumber. Then I hide the remote so nobody disturbs the dumb thing. #tv#smarttv
Question for #infosec fam and friends. I am looking at replacing my old Sony "smart" TV with something less "phone home" and less broken from a software standpoint. Something that doesn't require its own VLAN and is the number one blocked device by PiHole in the house. I'm considering something using Linux, something using a Mac, or an Apple TV+ (for ease-of-use interface). Any thoughts, advice, or "if I could do it over" stories are welcome.
As an FYI, the old television's app system is increasingly buggy, especially after upgrades to the Android OS and/or individual streaming apps, to the point of madness.
#Roku#SmartTV#AdTech#Streaming: "Last week, Janko Roettgers, a technology and entertainment reporter, uncovered a dystopian patent filed last August by Roku, the television- and streaming-device manufacturer whose platform is used by tens of millions of people worldwide. The filing details plans for an “HDMI customized ad insertion,” which would allow TVs made by Roku to monitor video signals through the HDMI port—where users might connect a game console, a Blu-ray player, a cable box, or even another streaming device—and then inject targeted advertisements when content is paused. This would be a drastic extension of Roku’s surveillance potential: The company currently has no ability to see what users might be doing when they switch away from its proprietary streaming platform. This is apparently a problem, in that Roku is missing monetization opportunities!
Although the patent may never come to fruition (a spokesperson for Roku told me that the company had no plans to put HDMI ad insertion into any products at this time), it speaks to a dispiriting recent trend in consumer hardware. Internet-connected products can transform after the point of purchase in ways that can feel intrusive or even hostile to users. Another example from Roku: Just last month, the company presented users with an update to its terms of service, asking them to enter a pre-arbitration process that would make it harder to sue the company. On one hand, this isn’t so unusual—apps frequently force users to accept terms-of-service updates before proceeding. But on the other, it feels galling to be locked out of using your television altogether over a legal agreement: “Until I press ‘Agree’ my tv is essentially being held hostage and rendered useless,” one Roku customer posted on Reddit. “I can’t even change the HDMI input.”" https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2024/04/roku-tv-ads-patent/678041/
@onepict a "TV" nowadays means a spyware ridden computer you have no control over, filled with #adds and #DRM. Fortunately you can also buy a 'monitor', they come in any size you like. Hook up a Debian miniPC or or laptop, and watch whatever you like without anyone watching you. #TV#AndroidTV#SmartTV#Debian#privacy

Wszystkie polskie komendy do Google TV Chromecast 4.0 HD, jakie są?
Dla Player, Canal+, Polsat Box Go, TVP VOD, Netflix?
Bo działa to bardzo wybiórczo.
Istnieje komenda, żeby włączyć konkretny kanał w aplikacji Canal+?
Bo serial da się włączyć, np. "Canal+ Belfer" włączy serial. Ale "Canal+ TVN 24" nie włączy tego kanału. #chromecast#google#googletv#android#tv#smarttv#telewizja

My Amazon Fire TV just performed a large update. Big enough that the update screen didn't even show the Amazon or Toshiba logo.
For a moment, I got worried it would fail. It rebooted and didn't turn back on itself (powered off instead). When I finally powered it back on manually, it took a while, and even after the display finally came on, it kept "thinking" with the red standby light cycling.
That is the downside of owning a smart TV. The fear that an update could brick it.
Owning a smart TV and opting into the paid subscription, only to end up using your computer to use the subscription, because the TV insists you purchase things that is included with your Prime Membership.
I factory reset my Amazon TV and have not logged back in ever since.
I bought myself both a Google Chromecast and a Roku Premium. Both work better than Amazon. I would not recommend buying an Amazon TV.
