I know about a thimble full of facts about the European Middle Ages but me scoffing at a faux Middle Ages 'soldier' (in a TV drama) referring to himself - and his band of bandits - as 'Soldiers of Fortune' led Boyf to look up the phrase and apparently it's origins date back to the early 1600's !
Still a massive anachronism, but we both learned a thing 👍🏾 😉
#OnThisDay in 1942, British troops landed on the island of #Madagascar. The British assumed the French would pit up little resistance, but the subsequent campaign lasted almost exactly six months.
It was the first major Allied amphibious invasion of the #SecondWorldWar, with the first use of tank landing ships (LSTs), and the first use of tanks in an amphibious operation.

We’re pleased to announce that these files have been integrated into our main database, Collection Search, and are now available through a new landing page.'
'The museum acquired the Patriots of Color Archive in 2022. In it: nearly 200 rare documents — original muster rolls, pay vouchers, enlistment papers, discharge forms and more — originally belonging to Black and Native American soldiers who served during the Revolutionary War.... Ancestry.com digitized the collection and made it available online for free.'

Good Morning #Canada
On October 16th 1690 English combatants, recruited from U.S. colonies, approached Quebec City and demanded the surrender of Quebec. The conflict produces a memorable military quote when French Governor Louis de Buade de Frontenac replies “I have no reply to make to your general other than from the mouths of my cannon and muskets”
The British attack fails and it would be another 70 years until Quebec falls.
