Element has a new home and will be adopting AGPL license for Synapse, Dendrite and associated server side projects.
"Future code contributors to Synapse will need to sign a contributor license agreement (CLA) based on the Apache Software Foundation’s CLA, giving Element ownership of their contribution so we can use it to help fund Matrix core development in future."
:matrix: So the dev teams of two major #Matrix homeservers, #Synapse and #Dendrite, have announced that they will fork their work to change from the non-reciprocal #Apache license to the reciprocal #AGPLv3. That is a good step in the right direction. #Copyleft is the only effective way to ensure software public goods remain open.
However the effect is not much change yet, because they will require a #CLA for contributions to be merged. Revert to a #DCO would ensure future protection.
I was hoping my #Matrix experience would be better after setting up my own #Synapse and #Element servers, but I think it's worse. It takes 10-15+ minutes to join a room that's on another server.
I really want Matrix to be the federated chat platform that #OpenSource communities (and others) can move to, but we need to somehow solve these latency problems.
After several years, I'm thinking of ditching my self-hosted Synapse/matrix server and Mastodon servers, as I am the sole user on each. I realized I see very little value now in hosting these with only one user, as it's not worth the log files and storage data that they accumulate. While I love self-hosting at home, I feel federated and social applications make little sense if there's just one person on it - outside of running it as a hobby effort.
A new award from National Institutes of Health funds preclinical work to prepare for a clinical trial assessing a treatment to reverse brain signaling damage in people with Alzheimer's disease.
I keep returning to the idea of running a #matrix server attached to mastodon.radio
We have an #xmpp server already, but I don't think it gets much use and not many projects host discussions on xmpp these days, and many use matrix so it feels like matrix would be more useful.
However, it is more resource intensive, I'd probably need to spin up a new vps dedicated to running the #synapse matrix server, and I don't want to use donations wastefully. Plus more admin overhead.
@neurovagrant Learning #Matrix and running your own #homeserver is very rewarding. I run #Synapse for my family and personal social circle (the way social networking should be), and to connect to other Matrix #spaces and #rooms. This includes bridges to #irc, #slack, #discord, #signal, #SMS, and so on.. Matrix is a super good and flexible way to serve you and yours. We even utilize the #WebRTC functionality for #E2EE voice and video chats. #digitalsovereignty should be way more popular. 😮💨
