Synchronet BBS as an node makes over a secure protocol because your exit node is the itself...

Brilliant!

But what about those users out there? How about a gzipped tarball, all nicely packaged up so you can distribute around, of a custom built client that will securely connect people to your over telnet?

Brilliant!

What was that again? Oh yeah, ... Brilliant!

Enjoy!

I love the headline of this post, "The Lost Worlds of Telnet". It tells a brief history of Telnet and showcases a few interesting servers to try.

What platforms were used in the 80s up to about 1993 or 1994 for Internet servers? It can be , , , , the , or anything else that was on the Internet in that era.

My research indicates Solaris was very popular for web servers until Linux took over, and so I suspect it (and SunOS before it) was very popular for the Internet in general, but I'd like to hear from anyone with this sort of experience.

The is not the "dark web."

Rather, it's the space full of little , , little websites, game servers, mumble servers, IRC servers, NNTP servers, etc running on home boxes and such.

It's underneath all the cruft. Blinking and chugging along and existing nicely.

🧑‍💻 The Lost Worlds of Telnet | @TheNewStack

「 But Telnet’s simplicity was ultimately its undoing. Back in 2007 Wired magazine noted that Telnet wasn’t included in Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system. “Devised in a simpler time, Telnet has no encryption and doesn’t come close to meeting modern security standards for logging onto a remote machine.” Most remote connections now happen using a more secure SSH client like PuTTY 」

It’s an interesting idea, but folks should maybe stop banging the “faster” drum. At human levels, it’s barely faster.

Maybe focus on the other factors, which are of more use to more people.

They just hammer with - esque exploits and try to into shit.

I'm trying to play with SH4 CPUs in a few set-top boxes I have. This is difficult as the whole STLinux FTP server is long gone.
If you, or anyone you know has these files:

STLinux-2.2-sh4.iso
STLinux-2.3-sh4-03-11-07.iso
STLinux-2.2-source.iso

or any other STLinux ISO files, please ping me! I want to document this strange CPU and the tools used to put linux on it.

Please retoot for a wider reach!

I just compiled a minimal kernel 6.5 for OS/1337 targeting instead of and the resulting binary is even 10kB smaller than the one for 6.4.12...

You can play online or watch live playing games of Nethack at: nethack.alt.org

By telnet: telnet nethack.alt.org
or: telnet nethack.alt.org 14321

Or by ssh: ssh nethack@alt.org

I found that very cool to see people going far in the game

(Wonder if BBS possible. Curious!).

DOSBox Staging Basics
Today: Improve Telnet-mode handling for modem emulation

For those hosting a BBS behind a Telnet interface, you can now pre-configure your serial port in Telnet-mode with the telnet:1 argument, as follows:

[serial]
serial1 = modem telnet:1 listenport:2323

For those dialling BBSs hosted behind a Telnet interface, use the following dial-prefix: AT+NET1DT. In general, the +NET1 or +NET0 AT-command will enable or disable Telnet-mode, respectively.

This change brings Telnet-mode in-line with the Hayes multi-character command specification, which should be compatible with existing BBS software.
