But tbh I think people really blasted #Windows8 harsher than it deserved to be, looking back. It made perfect sense for #tablets. Just not so for desktop and non-touch laptops. Perhaps if #Microsoft just branded it like "Windows Tablet" instead of marketing it as a successor to Windows 7 people would've been more forgiving and we wouldn't get the mess that is #Windows11 which I still don't understand what it's supposed to be and just seems to be designed out of spite. At least #Windows10 had the purpose of being a subscription-based OS in mind, well until they announced 11 that is...
I know the #fediverse here hates #Windows and MS (and I do too) but I kinda wish their eventual downfall was a little more dignified than this. Where #Linux finally wins desktop out of merit, not because its competitor shitted itself... :sagume_think:
@sebsauvage
I think I was one of the few people who liked Windows 8. I remember everyone absolutely could not get over the full screen start menu thing but I can't really remember them complaining about anything else, it was just the start menu stuff that had them so offended they rejected it outright. I absolutely did not care. It was different, yeah, but it was such a shoulder-shrugger for me, idk
Our #LinuxMint trial has been a success: I installed it on an old #windows8 computer, and had my swears-at-computers husband use it for a few weeks. He found it much less annoying than #windows10, and asked me to put Linux mint onto his laptop instead of windows.
I configured it a bit for him, but not much - everything he needs came in the basic install, and he finds the GUI fairly interpretable (biggest confusion was logging out vs powering down).
Windows 7 does this fun thing where even when you set sleep to 'Never' in Power Options, it STILL goes to sleep. 🤬
So today I installed this tiny, free little piece of software called "Awake" from download.com and it works GREAT. Apparently it works for at least Windows 7 to 10, and possibly even Vista.
"Ohai, this is Windows. You may have noticed that I killed all the long-running jobs that you left going overnight and restarted your computer so that I could inject some AI-flavored bullshit you never asked for into your (*) operating system. You're welcome!!!”
(*) “It's not actually yours, of course. The OS now works for our Marketing Department rather than you. kthxbai.”
“If you’ve previously upgraded a machine from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 11 or used one of these older keys, your activation status won’t change. You have a digital license that should continue to work. But if you were hoping to use this loophole in the future, it’s time to buy a legit Windows 11 key instead.”
@JohannessNilsson personally, I just wanted to beat #Floppinux and actually make something that is more practical than just existing and spitting out text on screen.
OFC long-term I do want to expand this further and make something that is still smaller than #TinyCore yet also practical to run on my #Atom#Z520-powered #VaioP11Z or any of those shitty #StickPC's and #Trash-#Tablets that have a #Z8300 and just 1GB of RAM and that already felt painfully slow on #Windows8 when they got released.
