We have bluebirds nesting in the yard so thought I would share this lovely pair from my bird collection, Happy Saturday!

There are 2 bluebird fledglings. This morning, they were fed by their father, but by this afternoon, they were eating mealworms all by themselves! (proud)

In this set of 3 photos, a baby bluebird fledgling is on the left, with its dad on the right. There is a pile of dried mealworms next to them. The baby is paying no attention to the mealworms and is honed in on its dad, who picks up some worms and feeds the baby.
The adult male bluebird is on the right and the two fledglings on on the left. Dad had been feeding the pair, but when he got a bit too slow, one of the babies (at the top) started feeding himself.

I needed a new iPhone wallpaper (I got tired of the guinea pig), so I made a couple using my bluebird pictures. Then I thought that maybe other people need new wallpapers too and maybe they like bluebirds. So take them if you want them, they're free.

It was sunny and above freezing today and the snow and ice is melting. Hubby and I have bets as to when the big piles will be gone.

A female downy woodpecker , with her black and white head, wings and tail and her white body, takes off.
A male Northern cardinal, with his red body and red and black face, took one look at me and leaped into the air.
As usual, the most numerous birds at the feeders were the bluebirds. Here, they are eating sunflower hearts, their second favorite food (after mealworms).

It was sunny but cold today. The whole bluebird flock showed up. A female flicker has been coming to the feeder every day for the past few days, but she's very shy.

A female flicker has come to the feeder in the last light of the day. She has black polka dots on a beige background and a little red line across the back of her head. Flickers are the only woodpeckers that spend most of their time on the ground.

There are so many bluebirds hanging about, as well as the usual suspects. And finally, the rain has let up and we have some sun.

A female American goldfinch, looking pale in the winter sunlight, sits on a branch, all puffed out.
A blue-grey tufted titmouse leaps from its perch, wings still furled, as it moves closer to the feeder.

The good news: the temperature is above freezing. The bad news: it's raining.

This tan and cinnamon colored Caroliina wren is singing. It's saying, "Get out of my territory, you bum," to another wren.

The starlings were so annoying that I put on my coat and sat outside near the mealworm feeder. The starlings are very wary of me and won't come near, whereas the bluebirds are familiar with me. After an hour, I was satisfied that the bluebirds got their share of the mealworms.

It was sunnier and not quite as cold (20F/-7C) today. The starlings continue to drive the bluebirds away from the feeder. Here, one descends from above and the bluebirds scatter.

The starling's tail is more visible in the top of the picture and another bird is taking wing.
The starling is now visible above the feeder and most of the birds are leaving, with the exception of 2 female bluebirds, whose backs are to the starling.
The starling is landing on the feeder, wings spread. All the bluebirds are leaving, save one, who is facing the wrong way and cannot see the starling. She is probably thinking, "It's behind me, isn't it?"

It was sunny, but very cold today. A flock of starlings has taken over the mealworm feeders and driven the bluebirds away. I try to scare the starlings off, but it is a losing battle. We have found that if you fill the mealworms feeders just before sunset, the starlings have already left, but the bluebirds are still there. (The picture is soft because the light was fading.)

After a 2 day respite, it snowed and is very cold again (13F/-11C). This time, the cold will only last 3 days (I hope).

It was cold, so lots of birds at the feeder today. A flock of starlings came by, along with half a dozen bluebirds, many different woodpeckers, some doves and the usual smaller birds.

This picture was taken just before sunset. Four bluebirds (2 male and 2 female) are sitting on top of the mealworm feeder, which is empty, though some mealworms still remain on the top of the feeder. The birds have been gorging all day on mealworms and now, after eating all those worms, they just can't eat another worm.

Dark eyed juncos usually feed on the ground (this one is feeding from my deck). They are slender birds, but this one had puffed its feathers up so much against the cold that it looked like a tennis ball with a beak and tail.

Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) commonly scope out nest boxes in winter but this nest box is made for Wrens, so only a perch while they view other accommodations.
