A sitting atop the feeder pole makes himself look bigger, expanding his wings and swaying back and forth to scare the much larger red-bellied off the suet feeder.

The nuthatch did this several times, but I only caught the last couple of seconds. It's right at the beginning of the video.

A nuthatch sits on top of a black iron bird feeder pole. There are feeder cages on both arms of the pole. In the center is a suet feeder being enjoyed by a red-bellied woodpecker. The nuthatch spreads his wings, leans forward, and sways back and forth to scare the larger woodpecker off the suet. The nuthatch then climbs down to the suet.

The good news: the temperature is above freezing. The bad news: it's raining.

This tan and cinnamon colored Caroliina wren is singing. It's saying, "Get out of my territory, you bum," to another wren.
A bluebird flutters above the feeder, preparing to land. I like its wings.
A ground of bluebirds have piled onto the mealworm feeder. In the front, a male and female bluebird have their heads together and appear to be conferring.

The White-Breasted Nuthatch is one of my favorite songbirds to spot! Known for their distinctive calls and ability to descend down a tree trunk and hang upside down to eat on seeds and insects.

The hierarchy of #birds:

  1. Eurasian #nuthatch is the boss. When he/she eats, great tits wait in line.
  2. Great tits are sloppy and picky eaters. Seeds fly all around. They prefer sunflower seeds.
  3. Marsh and blue tits are bit more shy, but eat together with the family (great #tits).
  4. #Robin is very shy, eats alone.
  5. #Finch is rare, also solitary.
  6. There are also bottom feeders (#sparrows and #doves) which eat what falls on the ground.

    And there's a #dog. He eats birdshit.
