"#Jack recently deleted his account on #Bluesky, once pitched—by him—as #socialmedia’s decentralized solution to censorship, and left the company’s board. I reached out and asked him why, which is where our call began…what follows is a missing chapter of internet history that sheds light not only on Bluesky, but #Twitter, X, and the past 5 years of censorship & backlash. The future will be decentralized, or it won’t be free."

Interesting interview with Jack Dorsey. Why he left , the relationship with Twitter and what he thinks about .

Where I agree with him: The importance of identity handling and the need to divide (commercial) platform and protocol.

That feeling when Mastodon people would rather side with Jack Dorsey than with the developers 🙃

Why there aren’t any leading news organizations on @Mastodon? #CNN is on #Bluesky but not here.

Bluesky enthusiasts are stating that Bluesky has ”plans” to make ATProto universal and transfer it to W3C or the like. Well, there is no evidence that Bluesky wants to give up control or the protocol is going to be widely adopted after 5 years of development so forgive me being sceptical. The story is a bit different with ActivityPub.

The is great from the Fediverse side, but the side is still missing a lot. Posts longer than the limit just get truncated; wouldn't a Read More link be better? And self-replies don't seem to get bridged at all, so threads don't work.

So, Jack Dorsey gave an interview about why he gave up on , and apparently it's mostly that they… started doing moderation? 🤨

Yes, they sometimes take down accounts that are breaking ToS, e.g. harassing others. No, I don't think it's a bad thing.

Now that more parts of the federation and user-controlled moderation tools are ready, you can post from your own PDS and you won't be censored unless you, like, post CSAM or sth… (and we do want to censor that, right?)

»There’s “absolutely no way” social media companies remain censorship resistant without moving to open protocols. “We need to change the foundation everything is built on.”«

Jack Dorsey is furious that #Bluesky has attracted "very very common" people. He also doesn't like the idea of moderation tools facilitating the banning of racists.

All these tech billionaires are like a version of the movie Big, in which a pre-adolescent boy wakes up in the body of an aging Howard Hughes. Or Colonel Kurtz. Or a sardine.

Jack Dorsey interview post-. Whatever you think of him, his views on why he helped getting Bluesky started in the first place are interesting. I wonder which of those might apply to the Fediverse (which he doesn't mention at all).

Former CEO of Twitter wanted to build a social protocol no-one can control, like SMTP or HTTP for social media. Bluesky’s ATProto was supposed to be an open source protocol that Twitter could eventually utilize, but then Musk happened and Bluesky started taking it to the wrong direction and everything fell apart in Dorsey’s mind.

A very revealing interview. I now see even more future in W3C’s ActivityPub.

@gruff @reiver Wow, this is the first time I hear about Farcaster.

So… now we have 4 protocols which all try to achieve the ”truly decentralized social web”:

  • ActivityPub
  • ATProto
  • Farcaster
  • Nostr

What a mess :blob_smile_sweat:

Good Jack Dorsey interview: https://www.piratewires.com/p/interview-with-jack-dorsey-mike-solana - he just fails to see that Nostr or any other protocol won't survive without a hit application.

Bluesky's Paul Frazee's answer is a good take on it: https://bsky.app/profile/pfrazee.com/post/3ks3iv5iwqs22 - Bluesky wouldn't even exist if they were doing just protocol.

I think the next sea change of behavior will be when @Mastodon, and @threads are bridged, and a Groups protocol matures. They will provide a kind of selectivity of topic, qualifications, and behavior. People are welcome to lurk, but what and how they engage will drive popularity.
