@taylorlorenz This is HORRIFYING❗️They are so afraid of an educated populace who knows how to think for themselves they have gone from banning books to banning libraries in no time at all.
I would like to point out that Hitler and the Nazis didn't get as far in seven years as the Rethuglicas have gotten now.
Hard to make out both sides of chainlink but this is an area half a mile away where a hundred people were displaced by #Minneapolis#police earlier this year, and this fence put up to completely cut off the boulevard from everyone (not only #unhoused people are affected by government-sanctioned #cruelty who would have thunk it?)
Jonathan Weller reminds us of why Gaetz and his fellow jackals do what they do. They want to depict themselves as noble freedom fighters, but they're fighting to put more money into the hands of their super-rich donors and to take vital support away from the needy at the bottom of society.
As Roger Sollenberger reports, though Gaetz pretends to be sustained by small donors, recent video shows what he's really doing behind the scenes, as he meets select groups of big right-wing donors to court their financial support.
“Food aid for Americans through the Women, Infants and Children (#WIC) program could be cut off for nearly 7 million pregnant women, mothers, infants and children.”
Did you know that one female dog and her offspring can produce a staggering 67,000 #puppies in just six years?
On average a female dog can have two litters a year with 6-10 puppies. 67,000 figure is based on all puppies surviving to adulthood. (numbers via #SoiDogFoundation, correct as of 30 June 2023)
Of these puppies, more than half will die before they reach adulthood. For those who do make it, they are bound to a miserable life of #suffering.
Every day is a struggle as they live in constant fear of #hunger, #disease, #injury and the risk of #cruelty.
"Everyone’s focused on Trump’s insane blathering, but we should be equally disturbed by the crowd’s raucous laughter [when Trump makes an ugly 'joke' about Nancy Pelosi's husband].
"We must help bring America back to a place where it is viewed as reprehensible to mock a victim of a brutal assault, call for the execution of a military general, demand the jailing of opponents, or threaten to close media outlets. The most disturbing thing that happened this week is that Republican convention attendees laughed when Trump mocked the attack on Paul Pelosi."
I"n speeches, interviews and campaign videos, Trump has promised to:
● Use the military to participate in the largest deportation of undocumented immigrants in American history;
● Order the National Guard into cities with high crime rates, whether local officials want it or not;"
"● Prosecute Californians who protect minors coming to the state for gender-affirming care;
Impose a 10% tariff on almost all foreign goods, increasing prices for consumers;
● Appoint a special prosecutor to 'go after' his political opponents, beginning with Biden;
● Purge the federal civil service of anyone who questions his views."
"The idea for such a device [i.e., Greg Abbott's buoy barrier in the Rio Grande, now found to have circular saw blades embedded in it] is not new. The Trump administration considered such a scheme to deter crossings as well, but it ultimately decided against it.
"The Trump administration solicited proposals for floating border barriers in 2020 but did not award a contract. One CBP official said Thursday the agency opted against installing the buoy system because it was expected to increase drownings and risks to U.S. agents conducting water rescues."
~ Nick Miroff, as cited by Big Picture and Todd Beeton
Remembering his experiences as a child in an internment camp for Japanese Americans, George Takei asks supporters to sign a petition calling for action to stop the cruelty Texas Republicans are visiting on migrants now. He writes,
"A leaked e-mail from a Texas Department of Protective Safety trooper documents the remarkably cruel measures Governor Greg Abbott has instituted at the border to deter crossings."
"There are few things more terrifying than demagogic populism, sharpened dangerously into authoritarian rule, with minorities left at the mercy of those now in charge of writing and enforcing the laws. Yet that is precisely what is happening across much of Red State America today."
"Biden’s real problem is not his age. It’s our age … of performative politics.
As usual, Donald Trump is at the root of the mess. From the minute he entered the 2016 presidential race on a golden escalator in a building blaring his name, U.S. politics has been a twisted reality show that elevates outrage, insults, and cruelty in a spirit of sadistic fun."
Will Bunch writes that the young man who drowned in the Rio Grande the first week of August due to Greg Abbott's buoy barrier had a name:
Norlan Bayardo Herrera.
But he adds,
"If I had waited on the American mainstream media to write about the human beings lost to the barbaric policies of the governor of the nation’s second-largest state, I would still be waiting."
Someone dumped a lovely #domestic#rabbit at our property in the country. Why do people do such things? The poor thing was so frightened in his new surroundings. He’s taken up refuge under a large cedar tree and we have put up some food and water until someone from #RabbitRescue can come for him. #animals#cruelty#abandoned
"One of the most stunning moments [of Trump's off-the-wall speech to the California GOP] came as Trump ranted about crime, and promised his federal law enforcement officers would be empowered to shoot shoplifters — which prompted wild cheers and chanting from the crowd that took a long time to subside:”
