It is a mistake to think of #nature as warm and cuddly. Many, perhaps most, #violent encounters between #humans and #wildlife are the result of the former treating the latter as #Disney characters.
One reason “#birds are #dinosaurs” made immediate sense to me was a vivid childhood memory: when I was about ten, I thought some #goslings were cute and wanted to pet them. #Mother#Goose had other ideas. Yeah, don’t do that.
It is equally a mistake to assume nature is All #Killing, All The Time. Fighting takes a lot of energy, and wild animals—including our own distant ancestors—are in constant peril of #starvation. Even a minor #injury can lead to #infection and #death.
Violence is a tool of survival, to be sure, whether in #predation, self-defense, or squabbles over #territory and #mating. Unnecessary violence is a quick road to #extinction. Most animals would rather do something else, when they can.
So before you fall back on “red in tooth and claw” as a default, look for other explanations. They’re usually more interesting anyway.
A sobering article. But it all comes to understanding when and how yo push yourself and pay attention to what your body is telling you. I’m a wee bit younger but am still running the occasional marathon, lots of half marathon distances (31 in March 2024) and I have always known when to give it a rest and how valuable good shoes are (and when to dispose of them).
There's always someone who tries it on: a person took a certain burger chain to court (yes, them) and sued them for damages and (potential) medical fees after burning themselves on a takeaway cup of tea.
Takeaway containers are marked for hot contents here, and the brewing temperature of between 90°C and 100°C is common knowledge, and that water cools - especially when eight minutes elapse between purchase and accident. It is also common knowledge that the lids do not fit perfectly, and no one should pick their takeaway cup of tea (or coffee) up by the lid.
The complainant lost the case, and was told to try turning commonsense on before going anywhere near hot things in future.
The US government has suspended its effort to survey #cryptocurrency#mining operations over their ballooning energy use following a lawsuit from an industry that has been accused by environmental groups of fueling the climate crisis.
A federal judge in Texas has granted a temporary order #blocking the new requirements that would ascertain the energy use of the crypto miners, stating that the industry had shown it would suffer “#irreparable#injury” if it was made to comply.

RUSH's ALEX LIFESON Says His Arthritis Is 'Slowly Getting Worse': 'I Don't Know If I Can Play Like I Played' 10 Years Ago
Hurt my knee while cleaning up some old ice because I didn't notice the thin sheet of new ice next to it.
Stupid +2°C weather always making trouble. Would've been better if it had stayed minus.
Looks like a damaged (not ruptured) patellar tendon (I probably know more about knees than your average GP thanks to having two poorly designed ones that keep doing things like that).
Guess I'll be limping for a while. Oh well, not much to do in winter anyways.
The goal is focusing on form, paying attention to stride length and how my right foot lands.
Running felt good without calf tightness/pain.
Today was session 1️⃣. Next ones at 2x/week as follows:
2️⃣ 1km run + 1km walk (x4)
3️⃣ 40s run + 20s walk (x30)
4️⃣ 2km run + 1km walk (x3)
5️⃣ 45s run + 15s walk (x30)
6️⃣ urban trail 8km [a mix of running and walking]
Great fall vibes at this morning's #run! Colours and rain. But I'm sad to say it was cut short due to calf... strain? Cramp? Injury of some sort? I walked back the last kilometre.
I'm not even sure how to assess and address this... rest, some foam, massage gun and reevaluate in a few days? When do I know if should consult?
Popular discussion of the harm caused by guns focuses on deaths, overlooking non-fatal injuries. But for every kid in the U.S. who dies from a shooting, 2 more are treated for bodily harm.
I'm dumb enough to get a frostbite from treating the injury in my calf with an ice pack. Yesterday morning I didn't put any protection between the ice pack and my skin and now I have big marks and bubbles to pop. How can I be so stupid??? I'm laughing at myself 😂😭
I'm at the podotrist waiting for my turn. Yesterday I applied ice to my calf every 3 hours. This morning was a tiny bit better although I'm still limping. Ice bag again during breakfast and ibuprofen to try to do the running test with the doctor. #running#injury
The podotrist confirmed that the problem comes from imbalances in my pelvis and he's preparing soles to correct the uneven stride for my right foot.
Barefoot or no-drop shoes are not suitable for me, as I have a high arch and I need heels to relieve the pressure on my calves.
The osteopath should be able to fix my pelvis issue though. And I should start PT again. Aargh this bothers me the most because it messes with my training schedule. #running#injury
Again I had to stop at barely 4 km because of the pain on my right calf. Now I'm limping. The same happened 6 months ago, but this time I felt the tightness increase with every km. It wasn't a sudden pain.
I'm not seeing the end of this 😭!
Luckily tomorrow I have an appointment with the podotrist. I hope that I'll walk normally and that I will be able to do the running test.
So activity for today was
1️⃣ 4 km #running
2️⃣ 3,5 km walk
I strained a hamstring on a run this morning, so I’m limping badly and grimacing every so often when a step goes wrong. I’ll be infinitely more patient the next time I see someone who needs a little more time to get around.! #injury#hamstring#running#trailrun
