Anti-camping ordinances and sweeps are pushing unhoused people into increasingly marginal spaces, exposed to extreme weather.
Officials in cities like Ontario, #California, can be hostile, by, for example, removing park gazebos.
But CA is prone to cycles of drought and heavy rainfall. And when the rain hits, like it did in Nov. 2022, it can be fatal to people living around culverts and drainage.
Housing journalist Peter Apps writes about how the Tories held down housing benefit rates which sent homelessness soaring and led to an exodus of poorer people from our cities.
Lmfao, they write up a sob story for the poor little lord sleeping in the basement of his restaurant but only briefly ask why he doesn't just use his tenant's rent to cover his own rental while he waits for the LTB decision.
His response? "I should not have to do that."
The fucking entitlement.
Does this tenant have a restaurant to sleep in? Do they have a rental income to subsidize their housing? Fuck you CBC.

"Historical photographs showcase the history of Asian American resistance movements from the 1960s to the 1980s, demonstrating the strength and resilience of the Asian American community among tenants, students, and laborers...They also remind us of the civil rights and labor rights won by Asian Americans with the sheer power of the collective."
'We need to build 90,000 social homes a year for ten years, with all rents tied to local incomes. ... this would not only eradicate homelessness, it would pay for itself – returning an impressive £37.8bn back to the economy in just three years. It would also save the taxpayer money, boost jobs, reduce the burden of poor housing on our NHS & improve children’s life chances.'
"When I shared complaints about my housing on social media, they went viral, and I began hearing from people in similar circumstances. It changed the course of my life"

How working for place-based solutions can change the world By Patrick Mazza, originally published by The Raven May 28, 2024
"...We must anticipate & prepare for extremes while also doing all we can to mitigate them and reduce their intensity. The more stressed systems become, the more difficult it will be for them to respond to stress. It’s a vicious cycle, the kind of feedback loop that leads to collapse. That is why we must build strong and resilient communities in our places, in our cities, towns, rural areas and bioregions. If systems break down at larger levels, we will have to fall back on our own places..."
I have mentioned many times that we will need to be prepared to take in our friends & family who will be displaced here in the US by disasters and climate collapse. The govt is not going to help. Our neighborhoods and congregations will be the basis of our sustainability.
CM Rivera is turning out as expected. She just introduced, in dead quiet, an amendment to kill a key program in #Seattle that funds affordable #housing and other equitable development.
The link below is to a web form CM Morales' office created to send email to the Council and Mayor. It took me about three minutes and most of that was me picking the right email address to use.
It was clear decades ago that gov't should be using a carrot & stick approach to get landlords and homeowners to prepare their buildings for climate change. This is another case of making poorer people suffer for the profits of the rich. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGPBpK-G0O4#ClimateChange#Housing
