@technotramp could I share a little of your Unexpected Tracks as the music for my show this week? (I talk about lisps and smolnet community news, while sharing awesome underground music of people I meet). Is there a big ipfs music scene? You are the first one I encountered.
I'm enjoying Honeycomb -> Funky Cat right now. I once had some bubble gum from Japan that had the words "highly technical flavor" printed on the packaging which this puts me in mind of somehow
As far as the #IPFS community is concerned, I feel the same as you. I'll probably really be #one of the #first. #RPlayer is available for #free, but the #problem is that it's hard for a non-technical #person to make their own #player. You need to program some #tools, but I'll do it.
I have an external drive with two volumes on it. One is named "timeMachineBackups" and I believe I copied a lot of stuff to it as well as using it for timeMachine backing up. It appears to have 0 free space according to Disk Utility.
#Problem: I can't mount that volume or do anything else with it. I want to copy off its files.
I think it goes at the #problem ass-backwards. The competition watchdog is at the wrong place in the workflow to accomplish much. By the time a #deal is announced, it's essentially too late for a #regulator to have a meaningful impact on things.
(Very) occasionally it'll block a #merger or #acquisition, but that's reactive at best.
I am going to point out now that I've been running my own mailserver for 15+ years
And I can't send mail to people with Apple or Google accounts. Why? Well, I'm not a known corporate entity. They whitelist email to known large businesses, an unrecognized IP gets blocked directly.
So y'know, yeah. Globally recognized protocol, got all the SPF/DKIM/DMARC/etc, but when it comes down to it, once big business gets a majority of an open protocol? They will devour it
It's been a big #problem for years, though it's getting #worse. The #Gmail / Outlook-Hotmail-Office365 / Yahoo triumvirate have backroom deals so they don't have #deliverability issues to each other. But the small guys have trouble delivering to them - particularly Gmail.
I've run my own mail server for going on 25 years now. For the last 15 years it's had the same IP. Strict #SPF & #DMARC, correct #DKIM & #DNS. Zero #spam. And I still have deliverability problems.
Part of the problem is Gmail's huge #influence. Like Lily Tomlin said, "We don't #care. We're the phone company, we don't have to.". So they don't give a damn if smaller domains have trouble delivering to Gmail #users. It's not like Gmail users have any way to actually inform Gmail that they're not getting their #mail.
And I'm sure it's just a #coincidence that the #problem just increases Gmail's business. People give up hosting, and #outsource their email to Gmail.
Dear mastodonians & fellow tooters. I need help. Every app in MS office is lagging so much that they are useless. I’m on a corp computer so I need to work with the IT dept. They’ve reinstalled the office suite but it doesn’t help. Every other app is responsive, so it’s not the computer. My co workers are on the same network, so it’s not network issues. What else can it be? #microsoft#msoffice2016#windows#problem#it#help
I'm getting #tired of #people responding to my "here's the #situation here today, and how the #engineering works out for this #problem" with #hopes and #dreams about how they wish the world was, or #anecdotes about how that problem doesn't exist where they are (which is utterly unlike here) so it doesn't matter.
In light of traditional and computational neuroscience the #problem of #consciousness is becoming less #hard:
We keep finding more evidence that the function of the brain is to SIMULATE the world.
We will argue in this thread there is nothing but the brain updating it’s state to have the least possible error in relative to sensory input, which now assumes the role of FEEDBACK.
Every spring, there are floods somewhere in North America. Maybe the Red River that flows up through North Dakota to Winnipeg and beyond. Maybe the winter snowpack is heavy and melts quickly in the Rockies, flooding out parts of B.C. Maybe torrential rains in Atlantic areas cause overland flooding throughout Quebec.
They call for #legislation to impose #caps on increased insurance costs, or to mandate certain #coverage be available. Or they call for government to start issuing its own insurance, at nominal cost and covering high-risk events and insureds, to people who would otherwise have high commercial insurance costs.
And governments frequently take up these calls to action.
Egads, you mentioned me on Hacker News. Sorry, "Hacker" "News".
I don't think it's happened before; what does one do in this situation?
I always loved the "chocolate-covered banana and integration of European currency systems" formulation. As you (quite correctly) point out, the obvious unconnectedness of the one with the other is the most fundamental aspect of the problem, and calling it "XY" loses that.
The scary part of GAI: Alignment. We only get one try at making an AI smarter than us agree to our goals. And since we don’t actually know how even GPT-4 reasons, we won’t evenknow when we’ve made one!
Ab 60.
