Deputy Marshal Bass Reeves is probably the most famous Black American of the old West. He was the FIRST African American to serve as a Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Born into slavery in 1838, Reeves had a reputation as a skilled marksman, excellent horseman, & resourceful lawman. He hauled in over 3000 outlaws to justice. His legacy as a legendary frontier lawman has made him an iconic figure in American history.
