#map Map of tropical storms over the last 100 years, by Python Maps. A very interesting Antarctic-centric projection, who makes it easy to understand the location and intensity of these natural hazards.
JFC, this is the stuff of nightmares 😳. It's like 2018's Michael but on steroids... you go about your day and off to bed, then just wake up to a Cat 5 monster on top of your city, no communication and too late to get out.
"Hurricane Otis made landfall overnight near Acapulco, Mexico, as a Category 5 hurricane with 165 mph winds. The storm rapidly grew from a tropical storm Tuesday morning to Category 5 by late evening, the fastest strengthening on record in the northeast Pacific."
These are rescued river birch seedlings I found growing in pots with my tropical trees. The two mature trees near our house died from salt water creep and high winds exposure besides being almost 30yo. Those trees were home to Prometheus and Luna moth caterpillars, fed and housed multiple birds.
Not that anyone from Vietnam or China is following me, but there's Tropical Storm Sanba... Curious if this will trigger any more extreme rainfall in the region. #cyclone#sanba#tropicalstorm#tropicalstormsanba
Mostly offline teaching a wilderness first aid class. For #disasters and #weather (and #Ophelia), you can find quite a bit on my server at https://m.ai6yr.org/public/local (many people here are posting on what's going on there and other WX/disaster situations).
Idalia got me thinking about how many storms have hit #Florida the past few years. I found this #hurdat dataset from #NOAA, then used #googleColab to spin up a #python notebook. Sure enough, as is known already, Tropical Storms are becoming more frequent.
Next, what about storm intensity? This graph looks at the max WindSpeed obtained each year since 1850. It seems the storms are grown stronger over time.
What about the size of each storm? Are they getting bigger ... any guess?? The data seems to say they are. This is the max Wind Radius obtained by storms , per year.
This all reminds me of old articles from #theOnion that would quote studies from "The Center for really Obvious Things". I have more questions than answers now. How did #NOAA data collection change over time? Did they miss/undersize a few storms before having satellite imagery? Do the fluctuations on these charts coincide with #elNiño, #LaNiña? Are we ready to stop using #fossilFuel yet?
Just heard the first lightning from #HurricaneIdalia . 🌩️
Shit's getting real.
I anticipate losing power sometime tomorrow between 1:00 and 8:00 PM EDT.
If you don't hear from me by Friday noon, send lawyers, guns and money.

The late-summer itch: Ankle-biting mosquitoes are in extra full force in L.A. Why? (www.latimes.com)
You're not imagining it. Fortunately, there are some DIY ways to keep the critters out of your house off and off your skin.
