https://www.gamesradar.com/after-years-of-supporting-mods-and-fan-games-valve-takes-action-against-team-fortress-and-portal-fan-projects/

I mean, fair is fair. You don't just nilly-willy port 's assets or any other developer's IP, for that matter, without licensing. It's problematic not only for the violator, but for originator down the line, as well. Such is the case with , and same with privately made gizmos from .

Whether some proprietary things were made in good faith or not is irrelevant, because, from standpoint of business, both this and depending project end up in association of some sort (unlike endorsement where both sides support each other on "paper").

> some amateur devs might start thinking twice before they start their next Half-Life fan project

...is but a consequence of dev understanding that their fan game won't make it to the finish line where it can proudly stay storefront and let Valve rest in comfort, knowing that it's linked to decent use of assets and not yet another wasteland.

Wikipedia notes that a rough English translation of the album name is; Watch out! The tram is coming. In other trivia, indie nerds who specialise in the 1990s might notice that the band name is taken from a song title off Now I'm a Cowboy, by British band The Auteurs.

"From my part, I believe the very concept of exclusive intellectual property with respect to recorded music has come to a natural end, or something like an end. Technology has brought to a head a need to embrace the meaning of the word “release”, as in bird or fart. It is no longer possible to maintain control over digitised material and I don’t believe the public good is served by trying to."

There seem to be two different ways of understanding the collapse of #TheBodyShop into administration (not just in the UK) only a couple of months after a #privateequity deal to 'save' the #business.

It could be a startlingly lack of due diligence & PE hubris, which has led to an emergency action to stem losses.... or:

(perhaps more likely) its a a raid on the residual #IntellectualProperty at the heart of the business; essentially a virtual asset stripping.

I'm going with the latter!

it is with great sadness that I have learnt that my co-author Professor Susan Sell has died unexpectedly.

Susan and I worked together on an historical project about #IntellectualProperty rights which became a journal article for RIPE & a well-cited book for Lynne Rienner Pub.

I met Susan when I was a mature PhD student and worked on this project with her on & off for many years.

She was an outstanding scholar & I'm sure will be greatly missed by colleagues & family (who are in my thoughts)

First, some background. In the the United States, we use the term #IntellectualProperty (IP) as a collective noun to describe a variety of discrete areas of law, including:

  1. Patents
  2. Copyrights
  3. Trademarks

All of these regimes have different governing statutes, different rules, different case law.

(There is some overlap & some cross-pollination, however, which is why I advise students who are interested in any one of these areas to study all three of them.)

OK, so Dropbox is sending user files to an third party AI system.

That resurrects some questions that I've had for a long time:

Does use of external data services, such as Dropbox, Gmail, etc, for unencrypted files risk losing or damaging patents (due to pre-issuance disclosure), trade secrets, legal privileges, medical privacy, or any other situation in which there are obligations to protect materials from disclosure?

Consider how angry a university or company could be if Dropbox caused a patent application (or issued patent) to become invalid because of improper external disclosure?

By-the-way, when I refer to encryption, I mean encryption under the control of the user/data owner so that the provider (e.g. Dropbox, Gmail) can not see anything but encrypted bits - and even that may leave sensitive source/destination information in the clear.

The #LogoFail #UEFI #exploit is a perfect example of how capitalism fucks everything up. So many people worked so hard on securing UEFI against #bootkits but having a goddamn image load was necessary for capitalist "intellectual property" to be enforced, thus opening this vulnerability for literally every Windows and Linux system with a hardware manufacturer logo loading in boot, which is most of them. https://arstechnica.com/security/2023/12/just-about-every-windows-and-linux-device-vulnerable-to-new-logofail-firmware-attack/

This isn't a security fail, it's a #capitalism fail, because the social/legal regime of #intellectualproperty is actually unnecessary and oppressive, and in this case prevented people from designing secure systems.
