Fedi, please help me with Firefox and PDFs.

When I click on a link to a PDF, Firefox does one of three things:
a)Display the PDF in-browser, without saving it to a permanent location on my computer.
b)Open a dialogue window asking me where I want to save the PDF.
c)Download and save it in my "Downloads" folder without asking me, and then display it in-browser.

It seems to pick one of these three behaviors at random. I can't discern any pattern.

The thing is, I never ever ever ever ever want it to do (c). If I'm saving a single file on my computer I always want to select the folder manually.

In about:preferences, I scroll down to "Applications," and see I have set PDFs to "always ask." But it doesn't always ask! I've also tried changing the setting to "Open in Firefox", and I get the same result: sometimes it opens in Firefox without saving, sometimes it saves it to my downloads and then opens in Firefox, and sometimes it asks.

What's going on? Why does it switch seemingly at random between these three behaviors regardless of my setting? How do I get it to stop saving things to my Downloads folder without asking?

EDIT: Oh whoops, I forgot to put my system information.
Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.1
Firefox Flatpak (currently 126, but it's been happening the same way for a long time).

Can anymany tell me how I'm "supposed" to use end-to-end encryption with XMPP?

As far as I can tell there are three totally different ways to do E2EE:

a)OTR : "[https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0364.html](Not intended to be a current standard), or technical specification, as better (albeit, newer and less well tested) methods of end-to-end encryption exist for XMPP. "

b)OpenPGP: There are at least two different XEPs about it. XEP-0027 is obsolete, while XEP-0373 is "experimental" but hasn't been updated in almost three years.

c)OMEMO: "Experimental" and hasn't been updated in over two years.

Is there a way to do E2EE in XMPP which is neither deprecated nor experimental? What's the "Current stable" way to do it?

I've a question about modern "homebrew" games made for old consoles:

Why is the original Gameboy such a popular target? Itch lists a whopping 6406 games tagged as targeting Gameboy. The second-most popular old console is the NES, with only 1848 games on Itch: less than a third as many as the Gameboy. The Gameboy Advance sits at only 450 games on Itch.

Why? What makes the Gameboy so much better of a platform for indie devs compared to the NES or later consoles? #Retrocomputing #RetroGaming #NES #NintendoEntertainmentSystem #Gameboy #GB #GameboyAdvance #GBA #SuperNES #SNES #SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem #Itch

Good news: I managed to recover my data and reinstalled Mint. Now just waiting for my package installer script to finish so I can go back to reading webcomics. Oh, and maybe fix the issue with my game controller that started this whole mess?

Use XMPP! It's totally secure and federated. The only thing you can use it to talk about is how much you love XMPP and how much you hate Matrix.

Okay fedifriends, please give me advice on buying a game controller.

Some background: I currently play indie games with native Linux support. But I grew up with consoles, and I still think that I'd be more comfortable with a controller for some kinds of games than with a keyboard In particular, I'd like to play precision platformers with a controller. I also think a controller would be good for homebrew made for old consoles.

I have a strong preference for wired peripherals over wireless, and a strong preference for peripherals that don't require their own batteries.

When I sit down to game, I generally want to be able to start playing right away without much set-up. If a game won't launch, I might spend a few minutes adjusting drivers or settings, or I might immediately give up on that game and pick a different game.

Hence, I'd prefer if possible to find a controller that works "out of the box" with a large number of games. I don't want to spend a lot of time configuring button mappings.

So with that in mind, what controller would y'all recommend I buy?

STOP DOING CHARACTER LIMITS!
Years of imposing artificially low character limits on social media yet NO REAL WORLD use found.

Want to write a short post? We had a tool for that, it was called "write less text than the maximum allowable length!"

We went from 100,000 character limits on forum posts in dial-up days to 500 character limits on Mastodon or 3000 on Misskey.

Look at some of the character-limited posts that character-limiters want us to take seriously:

  1. OTOOAIBOOAOMTGMKCIITMOM <--A giant acronym that's incomprehensible to anyone outside of the in group, just to save characters.

  2. An image containing a giant wall of text with no alt-text using 100 times as much data as the text on its own would use just to circumvent a character limit and exclude creatures who need accessibility.

3)Here's my very short post: a thread (1/2395872935)

These are REAL character-limited posts dreamed up by REAL social media users!

"Oh, I love short character limits: it means I don't have to spend time reading long posts. Instead I'll spent 20 times as long reading long posts split into threads and continually have to find my place!"
--Statements dreamed up by the willfully ignorant.

@Amelia and her headmate can't even agree on what character limit to use: is it 3,000 or 5,000? They have completely played us.

Genuine question: Who would win in a fight between a "Who would win in a fight?" question, a rhetorical question, and a bad-faith question that starts with the words "genuine question"?

You agree that a question starting with "genuine question" is the most annoying form of question, don't you?

Stop doing "stop doing" memes!

Centuries of internet memes yet no real-world use found for making infographics demanding other creatures stop doing stuff!

Want to stop doing something? We had a tool for that: it was called doing something else!

Here are just some of the crucial, irreplacible things that outlandish internet memers have demanded you stop doing:
*Math
*Character limits
*Stop doing memes

These are REAL stop doing memes made by REAL meme-makers!

"Stop doing replies to fediverse posts." They have played us for absolutely easy marks.

The phrase "danger to self or others" is a motte and bailey fallacy.

The motte is "murder is so bad that the government should use incarceration in an attempt to reduce murder."

The bailey is "suicide is so bad that the government should use incarceration as a punishment for anyone who even thinks about suicide. Moreover, mental health doctors should be required to play a dual role as both health care providers and cops, who must arrest anyone they suspect of thinking about suicide."

It frequently accompanies another motte and bailey argument, conflating the positions
(Motte) Many creatures benefit from consenual mental health treatment, and in some cases that may include consensually staying overnight in a medical ward.
(bailey): The government should incarcerate some creatures who haven't even been accused of hurting anyone and call it "mental health care."

The supporters of the latter position know it is indefensible, which is why they need to use dishonest arguments equating it with easier-to-defend positions.

What's the status of federation between Lemmy/KBin and Misskey/Sharkey/Firefish/Iceshrimp? I just tried loading several Lemmy and Kbin posts in Sharkey and it doesn't work. I remember having the same issue with Firefish, and I vaguely recall hearing awhile back it was something related to authorized fetch. Have their been any recent developments on that front?
